What Is So Special About This Dock Shot?

OK, like all of you I am a sucker for a cool photo of a cool boat on a cool lake. BUT.. And this is by no means a comment on our trusty shooter Dane Anderson who shot this photo. BUT.. this photo of Michael Langs stunning 1939 Barrel Back on our facebook page has been seen by over 11,000 people. WHAAAAAAAAAAAT? 11,000 humans in two days, in fact 99% of those folks were in the first day. Why? Its a dock shot of a killer Barrel back for sure. But 11,000 people? A normal showing for us is in the 2500 range. Barrel Backs for some reason really pull though. Like swim suit models, or even better, Miss Lisa, Matt Byrnes Gar Wood. We can’t show it anymore, Matt has a cease and desist order pending on us.

Todays header is an oldy but goody. I shot this on on my iphone years ago off my dockafter finishing the boat. It is now one of the top photos of a chris craft on the internet! Crazy!

Instead of a Barrelback would a Barrel of Jack be just as effective. Of course if you had it and it didn’t work you could always drown your sorrows.
I’ve been to Lynchburg and took the tour. Those barrels, if full, are more expensive than woodyboating. Still like to have one tho. Seems the US military is their biggest customer
Every year we send a team (very loose term) down to sample a few and buy a barrel. After its all bottled we auction off the empty barrel to help subsidize next years purchase.
I think what is really AWESOME about this shot (other then the boat is Beautiful) is the way Dane caught the reflection off the glass calm water.
Even the name Victory POPS right out at you off the water.

Dane’s shot is stunning in so many ways. Yes, the reflection, but also the three guys on the dock. The fact that their heads are cropped (Dane or Matt?) actually helps tell a story. Without even seeing them, the slight foward lean of their bodies tells you that they’re in awe as they peer into the motor. Art.

Absolutely LOVE the barrelback style.
This boat, WYN MILL I was the precursor to Wyn Mill II (obviously) which spawned the DONZI 16 …one of the best selling boats of all time.
It’s too bad Donzi changed the stern design away from the barrelback. My current project will attempt to put it back.

She sleeps tonight inside a marina on Portage Lakes Ohio, where last June she won “Best Chris-Craft” in the 38th Annual Portage Lakes show.
Next year, she’ll be in the Skaneateles NY show in mid July…can’t wait.
“Sylvia” or “Talaria” — both ways, she’s our dream boat.
She is now named after my wife’s grandmother’s little publishing company in Cincinnati which she ran in the 1930s and ’40s. In 1941, when Talaria was built, Annette Cornell had not one but two poems published in the Saturday Evening Post — quite an honor for a virtually unknown amateur poet.
Everlasting thanks to Don Ayers for pointing us in her direction, and for Matt for allowing us the chance to love her as he did.
