WORKBENCH, It’s Like “The Gate” Sequel.
The Alter
Oh? Did you think I was not going to keep this going? Thought the movie was over? And right before the credits. BAM, A Hand out of the grave….with a power drill in it. YA. Today you all get to bask in the last two days of loud music and warm weather here in Virginia. Even though its warm, 65 ish, its wet and very foggy.

So indoor stuff is more fun, especially when you don’t have any heat. So I looked around for some scrap wood and BAM, Workbench. And yes, I agonized over all sorts of design elements, and once again, chose to keep it simple and feel like it was always there.
All scraps including some 24 foot boards up in the rafters.
12 inches wide and 15 inches. 1 inch thickness.
Didnt even sand them.
Back in the day it would have been built during down time and 100% for use, not design, but I cant help it. It creeps out. Like a Shart! Ya, I went there. But you know exactly what I am talking about, and even though you are horrified, well.. Been there, done that. Can we get back to the work bench please?
Mr B sure loves some Planer scraps, makes a nest from it all
The setting
Pre tung oil and paint. The base will be green to match all the other work areas
With one coat of Tung oil, And trying out some details? Might be too much with the pads
And old hand rail makes a cool detail
Its more like a huge coffee table to hang around
I swear on a stack of bibles! Mr B loves it under there, and grabbed the bed..after humping it, and dragged it up there. Sat there contently for a while. I love it even more because of this. Its now the MrBench.
Had a workbench made from a section of bowling alley in my last house. Too heavy to move at the last moment. I miss it.
I love the subtle details like the arc of the lower shelf support beams. This bench is a piece of art done by a piece of work. The bench is the cornerstone of any shop and now it needs a vise. Man’s gotta have a vice or two.
I have several, this one’s been hanging around looking for a home. I just need to install it once Mr Bench is finished.
I like the handrail. A great place to keep a cleaning/wiping rag handy but Mr B might think it’s a play toy
My first dog. The bow was his favorite spot on any boat
Okay so I am into naming all kinds of people (especially weird neighbors that they will never know) but I have never named furniture.
Might be time for an intervention or a visit from the men in white suits with the padded truck.
Also consider a drawer or two on Mr. Bench. Very handy.

Work bench hell!! That is the beginnings of a bar. When I saw the step pads and the way it was made. Install a set of 6 inch locking casters and portable refrigerator underneath, and you got it.🍺🍸🥃🍷 just a thought.

My workbench is also a unique one……..it was once a Trenton MI High School shop class shop class work table. My friend John Eidt, is a retired shop teacher from said schrool, as Rush would say, . The schrool had a number of them(minus the medal lockers) in storage for as far back as 1939, and it was time to send them to a landfill. Just about that time I was creating my shop, AKA Arts Barn, and John “commandeered” one for himself and one for Arts Barn, It is unique in that it has a built in vice (just one of my vices) and all 0f the markings that a HS brat would carve in it, initials, swastikas punched with a nail, etc. I had considered resurfacing it but glad I didn’t…….I like the patina.
I added some 4/4 legs and a modified table saw wheel stand under it so it could be rolled around, BTW one of my better ideas.
Here is my workbench. Early 19th cent., maple, wooden screws and hand forged bench stops. All dovetailed. I have had cruisers worth less and less dear!

On that first photo of the table; is that a screw on the bottom shelf that missed the mark? If it is ; it’s something I would do and I do it quite often. But it does look great!
