You Asked For It, Today Is Crank Day!

S is for Sexy Crank!.. Or Stupid Crank

In yesterdays riveting story on the font selection of the EZ BLOW horn label. Someone thought they would be funny… and it was.. “Tomorrow we discuss Hand Cranks” I laughed and thought, ya, thats another topic I have yet to talk about. Since we are so deep into the weeds, why not.

They came as part of your tool set

BTW, if in anyway you are single and start yacking about hand Cranks and EZ Blow decals on horns, you will remain single. This is stuff that needs to stay here. NO one, and I mean no one understands this crap. Not even me. So today, I decided to do a crank photo series. We get to bask in all the crankness that is cranky.

The art of the crank

Simple and not really all that funcional

The handle spins, a nice detail

Twirl!

By the way, these are the most useless peaces of worn out metal. I needed one, had one and all it did was slip. This was on Stinky, on the W I would have ripped my arm off. It is basically a twisted chunk of metal that occupies a small space of the universe that we will never get back, unless its melted down and turned into a hub cap.  Oh wait, even Hub Caps don’t use this sort of metal. Maybe a missile head. Either one is better.

Stinkys Crank!

So are we board yet, I am. I dont even want to date myself now. So excuse me for a second, I think I hear my mother calling.

Enjoy Christmas Eve. Tomorrow we talk thread count on Reed and Prince screws. NOOOOOOOO… Tomorrow is the day we all brag about what we got for Christmas… Why? Because we are all still 12!

You wouldn’t happen to have an extra one for a 1954 vintage Gray Marine 100 HP 6 cylinder would you? Selling one might make you a little less cranky if that helps!!

Where they painted the same color as the engine? I see one blue one in Jim’s photo but it appears that all the others were left bare.

There’s one more out there Jim. The crank that came with the K in my 47 Deluxe had been painted blue at one time. I hope that does not make yours less valuable. I can’t believe we are having this conversation. Anyway, Merry Christmas!

Don’t give cranks a bad rap. They do come in handy when you need to turn your engine by hand to find TDC or to set points. Not so good for the starting of an engine.

Ahhhhh, hand cranks. Couldn’t imagine using one but I always get excited when there’s one in the bilge of a barn find. Is that weird?

Love the wording in those old adds. When was the last time you heard apparatus? Great universal word for something that may or may not work as advertised. And how bout dynamo. So much more exciting sounding that generator or alternator.

Have a Dynamo of a Christmas!

Dont have a picture handy of my pre-war crank, but it is painted black and as i recalll the “hand” end didnt have any extra metal on top of the bar, itself.

I don’t know, I see some remnants of bilge paint on that crank! So were they blue, Bilge color or unpainted, the universe needs to know. 🙂

Interesting to read where some wouldn’t use a hand crank to start and inboard but I’ll bet they would use a pull rope to start and outboard…Same principle ???

    Anyway…Merry Christmas to all….

If starting w/ a hand crank, be sure to pull upwards, or it may break your arm. That in mind, have a Merry Crankmas!
