The Boatresses first ever trip to the Waffle House.

Well, today we are headed back to Reedville after the road trip of all road trips. We spent the night last night in The Lake Rabun hotel, on lake Rabun. A small charming hotel on a small charming lake in the Georgia Mountains.

The light rain on the new metal roof to fall asleep with was perfect. The trip has been a fun journey, starting in DC, then to Kansas City, Boulder CO., Salt Lake, Napa, San Francisco, Tuscon, Marfa Texas, Huntsville Texas to see the Boatresses Mother, then to Biloxi and then to Lake Rabun.

Over 8,000 miles of contrasts and joy. We stayed at the best places we could find on the fly, and ate at the best and worst places we could find. Its a perfect metaphor for the wonderful 30 years of marriage with my special partner in crime. Thanks for putting up with the late reports and updates.

In the 1990s I was headed to Mt. Dora on I-75 in Georgia. We were hungry an the truck was thirsty so I went through Macon instead of taking the bypass. After finding no food I stopped for fuel. Wouldn’t you know it there was a Waffle House right next door. I sent my girlfriend in to ask about a good place to eat. She returned laughing so hard sell could hardly walk. What did they say I asked? In her best improvised southern accent she said “honey you don’t want to eat at no Waffle House, get back on the freeway and take the bypass there’s eatable food there”. Never forgot that, and stayed away from Waffle Houses.

For those of us in the south myself and my friends love the Waffle House, they have great omelets and of course very good waffles, One of my friends and I go there every 3 or 4 weeks and he gets a double waffle along with pretty good coffee, double sweetness ha, The inn at Lake Rabun is a really neat place that hopefully you had a good dinner there and went to the marina across the road to the woodboat showroom. What a great trip and happy anniversary. We are looking forward to Mt. Dora and some good weather, I made my reservations a couple of weeks ago. Happy New Year to everyone from Southern Ky.

Doesn’t sound like they they made it over to Hall’s Boat House unless he is saving it for and entire daily commentary. Doesn’t sound like they stopped at the Bar-B-Q place on the West side of Clayton on their way to the lake. Oh…well reasons to go back.

We arived at 530 and had to sash around the lake to at least see it. That didnt take long. Both lakes. They are very small and the houses ..Million dollar houses are packed in there. We had dinner in Clayton at a fun Bar. The entire area was closed. And left this AM at 7Am. Its a beutiful area. And I am glad we were not there durring the season cause it looked like they would have some kinda crowds there.

When I was at Vanderbilt, there used to be a Waffle House right behind our Fraternity house. As we used to say it was within staggering distance. The business model/motto was firmly ingrained in all of the regulars “Welcome to the Waffle House-we specialize in half cooked bacon, burnt toast and raw eggs. Our customers are drunks, vagrants, singers or assorted miscreants. We aim to please, but seldom do. We hire from the work release program and promote from within (If you ain’t on parole-don’t apply). If you are looki’n to lodge a complaint or receive an apology see Flo. All apologies start with Well Bless Yo heart Honey. And finally, we are proud to display our “C” rating from the health department as a testament to our culinary achievement.”

When you were drunk, the place took on a certain ambiance that rivaled anything Norman Rockwell could envision-Americana at it’s finest. We would tell the freshmen that when you wanted to eat you went to the Waffle, but when you wanted to dine you went to the White Castle.

My girlfriend and I had breakfast at the Awful Waffle yesterday, both had omelettes and they were great as usual. 😉

We don’t have Waffle House (or IHOP) in Canada. Several years ago on a business trip to Nashville, we stopped in for a quick bite before a meeting at our HO. The food was fantastic and I remember the place being quite clean.

So, on our recent trip to Florida to pick up my 1965 Formula Jr project, we stopped at a Miami Waffle House because my son loves waffles…. never again! dirty, greasy, undercooked, poor service while gaining an understanding why Americans want carry and conceal laws. maybe next time we’ll try IHOP!

Reminds me of a boat delivery trip passing thru northern Wyoming stopping at a “Mickey D’s” (only thing open at 930PM and I asked the counter person what’s in these new wraps and she says “I have no idea, I don’t eat this crap”. Millennial job training progtam???

An epic road trip fitting the occasion. Did you see the Marfa lights? If you went to Wentzells Oyster House in Biloxi, you might have seen a photo of their best waitress, Miss Pinkie, taken by ARRRGH! aka Larry Nichols. Our favorite stop along the road to Tavares.
