Staining Your Way Through A Penn Yandemic.

She needs a little cleaning
Well, this is for sure one of those jobs that takes some time, and that is what we all have right now. Fellow Woody Boater Todd Weitekamp sure is going for it. A Penn Yan.. When I see those little lust suckers at a show, I always think, dear god, I would hate to know what it takes to redo one of those interiors.. Apparently a world wide pandemic is a good answer.

Okay, lets get her home
Todd’s Uncle bought this around ‘68. He sold it to Todds family and doing a winter refresh on her. Fast and fun for sure!

Into the new space to strip her down.. YIKES
Thanks again Todd for all the photos, and no captions.. So you know what that means.. WOOOHOOO! I get to make them up..

Removing the branding

Slave Labor purchased at a local Chucky Cheese..

Wait.. This isn’t fudge. What the!!! DAAAAAAAD!!!

I love the look of this wood aged..

We are there with ya Todd.. All the way.. Until you actually want us to help..
Todd said, “I had to make a run to the store (curbside service of course) for a different color oak stain but I think the little boat turned out pretty good. Planning to seal her up tomorrow between teaching the kids at home! Normal work, kids school work, work on the boat….lots of work!”

This is child abuse.. labor laws, all of it.. But a brilliant move! he will remember that his entire life.. Oh trust me, it will come up in therapy at age 40…

NO! my A.D.D cant handle this

Broken worn out old wires

Bring on the stain

Putting the entire family to work

Sanding the seams. BTW, not as fun a date as Dinner with the Steamowitz’s who are much more fun..

Hey this isnt fudge! TOOOOOOOODDDDDDD!

Really? Put that dam camera down and do some work.. All you do is yabber and take photos..
Okay, let’s take a little break here while the Weitekamp’s deal with Child Protective Services. Hold please. Wow, I did not see that Drama coming..
We are back. Hope you enjoyed your little calm break..

Okay, thats a pain in the.. Todd. Remember.. It’s just a screw.. An orignial Bronze screw that will drain your family dry.. RUN TODD RUN!

A HUGE THANKS TO THE WEITEKAMP FAMILY OR WHATS LEFT OF THEM, FOR SHARING AND KEEPING US ALL ENTERTAINED..
Looks great. And it is not child abuse it is the phys Ed part of teaching at home.
Its all in who you ask Syd! HA,
Great project, memories made. Question – after staining. I have recently read people then use CPES or a sealer then go to varnish… I have never sealed after staining, always went to varnish…. love that little outboard.
Yes, I just the Petitt sealer on this boat as well as our ‘55 Correct Craft. I’ve heard of people just going straight to a diluted down varnish too. Since we are doing this in a barn, I wanted to get the wood grain sealed up ASAP before the spring temperature fluctuations.
The CPES is to protect and strengthen the wood. It works as a primer/sealer as well, but the main purpose is to penetrate the wood and protect it from future break down.
chris craft engine in a box on the right?
nice work project….love the Penn yans…

Close, but it’s a Gray Marine 135 and trans that came out of our ‘55 Correct Craft. Replaced it with a Hemi. Very low hours but it’s ready to be painted the correct color for 1955 and put all the accessories back on. Need to sell it if you know of anyone!
Todd – nice job on the boat! Whereabouts is your runabout located in Illinois?
We are located 20 miles NW of Champaign. Primarily boat at Clinton Lake. You?
I’m close by in Bloomington IL
Fisher Illinois
Got it sealed…..

Neat project Todd and family. I liked the Ford sign in the background, and the longneck on the seat. My kind of guy. I’ve got a little Penn Yan project of my own going on right now. New transom rail, and motor plate on “little One”. Gotta love those little Penn Yans. Thanks for sharing.
Let’s try again with a picture!
Oops. Picture didn’t show up on my computer sorry.
Before I get castrated about using air nailers on a classic boat. That did not happen. Unfortunately the boat doubles as a storage cabnite for a kitchen remodel that I also have going on. Oh this quaranting.
Thanks Todd, nice job. Please post pictures when you get her all finished.
Awesome work Todd! I am also Penn Yan caretaker and know all too well the amount of effort and time to keep them going.
