Staining Your Way Through A Penn Yandemic.
She needs a little cleaning
Well, this is for sure one of those jobs that takes some time, and that is what we all have right now. Fellow Woody Boater Todd Weitekamp sure is going for it. A Penn Yan.. When I see those little lust suckers at a show, I always think, dear god, I would hate to know what it takes to redo one of those interiors.. Apparently a world wide pandemic is a good answer.

Todd’s Uncle bought this around ‘68. He sold it to Todds family and doing a winter refresh on her. Fast and fun for sure!

Todd said, “I had to make a run to the store (curbside service of course) for a different color oak stain but I think the little boat turned out pretty good. Planning to seal her up tomorrow between teaching the kids at home! Normal work, kids school work, work on the boat….lots of work!”
This is child abuse.. labor laws, all of it.. But a brilliant move! he will remember that his entire life.. Oh trust me, it will come up in therapy at age 40…

Great project, memories made. Question – after staining. I have recently read people then use CPES or a sealer then go to varnish… I have never sealed after staining, always went to varnish…. love that little outboard.
Yes, I just the Petitt sealer on this boat as well as our ‘55 Correct Craft. I’ve heard of people just going straight to a diluted down varnish too. Since we are doing this in a barn, I wanted to get the wood grain sealed up ASAP before the spring temperature fluctuations.
The CPES is to protect and strengthen the wood. It works as a primer/sealer as well, but the main purpose is to penetrate the wood and protect it from future break down.

Close, but it’s a Gray Marine 135 and trans that came out of our ‘55 Correct Craft. Replaced it with a Hemi. Very low hours but it’s ready to be painted the correct color for 1955 and put all the accessories back on. Need to sell it if you know of anyone!

Neat project Todd and family. I liked the Ford sign in the background, and the longneck on the seat. My kind of guy. I’ve got a little Penn Yan project of my own going on right now. New transom rail, and motor plate on “little One”. Gotta love those little Penn Yans. Thanks for sharing.

Before I get castrated about using air nailers on a classic boat. That did not happen. Unfortunately the boat doubles as a storage cabnite for a kitchen remodel that I also have going on. Oh this quaranting.
