Super Turds And Green Bilges! Today On Woody Boater!

Thats one special mouse
Thanks to fellow Woody Boater Mark Setterholm for sending us in some Super Mouse Turds and what is a special Sea Foam bilge color! I will add that we are always impressed with Marks amazing set up and now the skills of his mice!
“We pulled the bottom off of the CC 17’ Special Sportsman last weekend and found mouse turds IN-BETWEEN the frames and plywood sublayer. (how the HELL do those freakin’ rodents drop a deuce in such tight quarters?)

It takes a special pooper to get in there!
Maybe that is part of the reason that “Stinky” still stinks? You’d better put a new bottom on “Stinky”. Don’t forget reason #2 for doing it. Safety. 🙂

P.S. This sea foam green color is original from the factory. I’ve never seen this color before. Yellow factory bottom too. I’m going back to these original colors in the restoration.”

Get out the mop
The thurds are definitely original, but I have my doubts about the green and yellow colors. Is it possible the boat had a bottom off restoration 30 years ago and the colors changed then?
That will require a Super Duper Pooper Scooper 😊
Like that sea foam by the way
Yellow bottoms are rare but not that rare. But that sea foam bilge is bad ass.
Could be worse. Larger rodents and raccoons.
That looks like the same yellow as my 1953 Rocket which was original under two other colors.
I too stuck with the yellow and I get lots of positive comments on it.
Good decision to stick with it.
I like the green. It is reminiscent of the zinc chromate developed by Ford in the 1920’s and used in military aircraft since the 1930’s. Although the purpose of zinc chromate is as a corrosion resistant primer for metal, it is also anti microbial and destroys any organic growth. The green colour is a natural colour of the chemical material and aesthetics were considered secondary or irrelevant. At any rate… it looks cool.
I have seen sea foam interior seat frames and other miscellaneous pieces in a sportsman before. Thought it was odd, but was very original boat. Remember Rockets were painted white in the bilge and some barrels were gray.
Hi, I completed a restoration of a 1955 Chris Craft 17′ Sportsman earlier this year. Originally that boat was given the green color paint treatment to the interior of the hull as well. I still have a few of the green frames that I replaced taking up space. All of the interior of that boat was painted that color, just like the boat featured here.
Like the colors! Yellow bottoms do look sweet on varnished boats 🙂
I had a 1955 17′ Sportsman and the bilge and undersides of decks were a forest green. It had never been restored before I got it. Chris Craft must have used whatever bilge rated paint on the line at that time, as I have seen white, gray and the mahogany brown. May have been what was used at the Cadillac MI plant where these were built.
OK, Mark, it’s time I drove out and saw the shop. Perfectly white, and even an oriental rug. It’s as pristine as your Lyman.
My ’55 Sportsman was painted green in the bilge as were all the others. I found the best sample of the color on the straps holding the gas tank. Sent that sample to Kirby Paint Co. for duplication in alkyd enamel. Happy with the color!
Almost all of the Sportsman’s in the CC-17 hull series had the bilges painted green. Around 1958 they started varnishing them.
