Chapter 3 Of 3 On Tahoe: The People Make The Place

TAHOE: where the Gods come to play

Thanks AGAIN to Steve Lapkin and the good folks on Lake Tahoe for…for… well, being amazing people. THIS WEEKEND!!!!!

Sometimes never an empty inch of space in order to get an up-close view at Obexer’s Marina, the Concours site

Tahoe. How large is this lake? The water in Lake Tahoe is enough to cover the entire size of California to a depth of 12-14 inches. It is 12 miles wide and 22 miles long…with 72 miles of shoreline. The surface area covers 191 square miles: that’s 10 times the size of Manhattan!

The early-birds get the sunrise with all these amazing distractions

There’s a lot to love about Tahoe. And it has attracted an energetic cross-section of Americana (and worldly tourists from abroad) for eons.  Yes, Sammy Davis, Jr., Frank Sinatra, Cher, and now Zuckerberg…are part of that patronage.

Dave Olson, one of the show’s senior statesmen and we thank you, Dave, for your leadership over the years!

But, here, in the attached visuals, is the REAL Tahoe lifeblood; many you have known and call your close friends for decades. Collectively, they have made the annual Tahoe wooden boat weekend what it remains and continues to this day.  Together, with their families, they harvested one of the most diverse collections of mahogany and chrome anywhere on the planet for public viewing and benefit via the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation.

NOT SO FAST – perennial show entrant, and winner, Doug Elmore with his son Jeb.

I, too, just happen to be one of the original tribesmen. I am older than you think.

He’ll always be with us! Tony Brown. What a marvelous chap!

Here’s my third in the series of galleries that just might tip you over the edge, and sway you  to Tahoe this coming weekend for the 50th celebration of the Concours d’ Elegance.  The entries will surely blow your socks (or sandals) off and/or pop a few champagne corks.

Plenty of barrelbacks. And time for a fatherly-son chat. John Iles and son aboard Miss Arrowhead.

Tahoe this weekend followed up with the Monterey/Pebble Beach Concourse…Simply a wonderful way for a motor head to spend a few weeks away from Sacramento’s heat…

The essence of Tahoe on these pages. What Steve hasn’t told you is that he has the most encyclopaedic memory for Tahoe. I once enjoyed a long weekend attending the show with Steve. Each morning we would meet to get coffee and set off for the show as I drove Steve recited the history of Tahoe and the families who had made it their home. He recounted names with ease, the boats they owned, the years someone sold a noteworthy boat to someone else and who married who and what their kids went on to do. Moments I won’t ever forget. We drove past Herb Halls old Marina Sierra Boat and on and around to Obexars. And after a history lesson and good coffee we arrived to see some of the finest boats I’d ever seen. Even got out on the water to see Thunderbird come in. Steve you need to write the book!

Duster – I can be speechless at times – and this is one of those moments.

A pleasure to share what’s in my gray matter………for all to take in – and eventually make Tahoe a personal destination.

      SEE YOU SOON good friend.
