Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center, Lake Darling, MN

The 2013 Minnesota Lakes Classic Boat & Car Show kicked off with some pre show activities on Friday afternoon. About 10 cars from the Motoring Journal’s Speed Reunion went out for a tour of the Alexandria Lakes area with a stop at the Carlos Creek Winery.
They returned to the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum where Bruce Olson and his capable staff had indoor space waiting for the returning cars and a nice afternoon reception with refreshments at the Museum.

Volkswagen – Falls Flyer inspired parade car at MLMM which was purchased at Mikkelson Museum Auction in 2012.

Liberty V-12 on display at Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum. It’s exhibits like this that make the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum one of the finest in the country.
From the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum it was off to the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center for a social hour and dinner at the indoor tennis center. Arrowwood Resort is a short 3 mile drive from the museum. The tennis center allowed for indoor parking for the car club and also several of the boats that will be part of Saturday’s boat show.

A 1941 Larson Falls Flyer with ’41 Johnson 22hp outboard that Dennis and Peggy Pazderic purchased from Mikkelson Collection auction.
Larson Boats and the Falls Flyer are the featured boats for this years show and several boats from the Paul Mikkelson Collection auction are here for the show. Paul Mikkelson is the honorary chairperson and was in attendance today.
After the social hour at Arrowwood a great dinner was served. It was really quite nice to have the dinner tables set up among the cars and boats indoors allowing for post dinner tire kicking and fellowship.

Our friend Dave Bortner from Freedom Boat Service is in Alexandra this weekend with his very nice 1969 Mercedes 300 SEL. Dave has also brought “Hornet” a V-12 Scripps powered 28′ Gar Wood triple cockpit runabout to the show and will be donating boat rides to benefit the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum.
The Motoring Journal’s Speed Reunion 2013 featuring classic European automobiles make their second appearance at this year’s show. Fine automobiles from notable European manufacturers are on hand for the public’s enjoyment.
All automobiles will be displayed on the lakeside lawn in front of Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center today. A nice compliment to the classic boat show. Several 15-minute seminars will discuss the classic boat and automobiles hobby.

Thanks Dane! Stay tuned later this weekend for another update from Dane at Lake Darling as the show gets under way and the boats get wet.

Thanks for putting in some car pix too.
That Liberty is AWESOME!
Yes – those 400 HP Liberty V-12’s are massive, and they sound awesome.
Wow! Very cool…
The boats are fantastic but, the cars are ‘over th top”. I’ve never seen an MGA 1600 with a supercharger… a beautiful car. And that “Frankfurt Flyer” is out of this world. hard to believe a guy built that 99% by himself. What talent. That car is also beautiful.
for me, any detailed engine can be a showstopper… but that Liberty V12 is more than a work of art.
Thanks for the look.
word for today, AWESOME!!!
I am sure Paul Mikkelson is having fun sharing his vast knowledge of the Larson marque and seeing some of the boats again from his collection.
Be sure to ask Paul (aka “Sven”) if he’s got some new “Ole and Leena” jokes, he’s the best “Sven” I’ve ever heard.
next to Bob “Tipster” Johnson, that is.
Paul did break out ‘de tick accent’ I don’t think he can go more than 5 minutes without cracking a joke.
Paul and Bob are quite a pair. They’ve been competing for the same jokes, and boats for the 30 years that I’ve known them.
