If you ever wondered what it was like behind the scenes at a classic boat show, thanks to our reporter Kentucky Wonder for sharing these forgotten photos on his laptop, you can take a fun glimpse into the other things to do other than drool at the magnificence of varnished mahogany and chrome.. OK, the chrome is not varnished… Nor is the leather… Or engine.. Just the wood.. And the varnish.. The varnish is varnished? OK, anyway.. enough of that.. Here are the fun lost photos from Mr Wonders computer.
Randy Cunningham poses with the beer bottle that got him in trouble. Cunningham was backing his 1965 Philbrick into its slip when offered a beer from a bystander. Distracted by the ale offering, he ran into a dock roof support, breaking his stern flag pole in the process. The pole was repaired with duct tape and zip-ties, with the bottle added later for explanation.
Dennis Mykols gets a snapshot during the Hawaiian Luau Thursday at Lake Chatuge. Unsure of Mykols’ subject matter, though the previously-mentioned Carla began sporting her coconuts at around the time this photo was taken.
At Thursday night’s Hawaiian Luau, there was so much fun to be had, even Tater the Dog got lei’d.
John Heiderich cruises past the docks on one of his Hydro-Mites, this one powered by an electric motor. Heiderich offered to let anyone who wanted to drive to have a go. The gasoline version, at 5+ HP, was kept at dockside, given its significantly higher top speed capability.
Construction begins on a cardboard boat to be entered into the race Satuday at Lake Chatuge. Each contestant was given two 4’x8′ sheets of cardboard, one roll of duct tape and a box cutter to build their boat. After two hours’ time, the race began. The race is a longstanding tradition at the Lake Chatuge Rendezvous, put on by the Blue Ridge Chapter of the ACBS.

Henry Moore goes below deck and dash to replace a fuse on his 1959 Shepherd. It was the first time this year in the water for the craft, which is beginning its 56th season.
They should let the kids put 3-4 coats of varnish on the cardboard boats. It would give them better UV protection.

Just shows to go ya what a good imagination with a camera can capture. I want to know who is the author of the dog caption. It reflects a wonderful command of the English language……and at the same time draws a “booo””hiss” from the peanut gallery.
In my defense, it ‘s not every day you get to see Carla and her Coconuts… not did I mention, those are some.. opps, never mine…
