You are not gonna like me today. I promise fun tomorrow.. So I was on the phone with a pal and we discussed the possibility of a big boat show this year. And it hit us both. PERFECT! Oh, I aint going, and neither is he, and forget her, she wasnt going anyway. But we will wait.. Here is the plan. Do the show. Which attracts “the age group most at risk” As in YOU reading this. Then many of you leave your protests and go, because it’s just a political play. Go ahead.. three weeks later.. BOATS FOR SALE CHEAP! Show boats.. Flooding the market. Here is how the ad would read.
“USED TO BE RARE BUT NOW FOR SALE BY ANGRY WIDOW. BEST OFFER! Will need to be disinfected, and left in a building for a month. Otherwise good to go.”

That’s how this plays out. As someone working on Healthcare messaging 24/7 I ASURE YOU THIS IS REAL STUFF. Healthcare workers are dying in insane statistical number and getting sick. This is a very very nasty virus that even if you don’t get it, can overwhelm the health system you rely on. Yes, in some areas things are calming down, and other areas growing. Just yesterday numbers doubled in Northern VA. This is going to be a way of life for at least two years. YES.. The new normal. If you have a Dr in your club, ask them. Use this story as an excuse. I am okay with that. I do care for you, I deeply care about your small business. I do want to go to a show. I am in the same situation. Bitch all you want, yell at me, it’s understandable. BUT. This is how all horror movies start
Be creative for all our sakes. Think outside of the show. I will help. We can brainstorm together and I will support any club that tries something different. And will NOT support your show if it goes on. in fact, I will remind people NOT TO GO! And to the club that says screw you WoodyBoater, sure we will have a show. Can you advertise the boats that will be there and the angry future widows names.. Asking for a friend.

You can go out for a day, week, month, or year. Social distance and quarantine to your hearts content. Anchor out on remote islands and wave to all those poor people on shore who can’t go to a boat show.
Sounds great except our boat ramps in my city are closed to help “flatten the curve” and to prevent people from stealing TP from the restrooms!

Our show, (Lake Okoboji, IA) is just shy of three months away. as of now, we are planning on having it but that can change. Our thought process is that 90% of boats that come are already on lifts on the lake. I completely understand if we have cancellations from people who would be traveling and need to make travel plans but we probably wont call it off until the Forth of July and our show is on July 25th. To me it is premature to cancel everything this far out.

I agree that small shows should turn into “social distance gatherings” of boat owners. At the same time the larger shows have a LOT more prep work and will need to cancel early to avoid wasting money and man power.
Our show is in the 50 boat range where we do a cruise and dinner the day before the show and try to do something the day after the show as well. We just do it in a way that things can be flexible and we can make that call about 3 weeks out.
Thank you Matt and all, We had a meeting last night to decide what to do with our 33rd annual Whitefish Chain Classic Boat Show which is scheduled for June 20th. Effective today, THE SHOW IS CANCELLED. If things change rapidly, we may have an unofficial show at The Fabulous Moonlite Bay (our usual location) on that Saturday. If not, hopefully we will see all of you at the August Show at Bar Harbor on Gull Lake and at our show on June 19th 2021. Stay Healthy. Regretfully, BT

SoCal isn’t the only ACBS Chapter experimenting with Virtual Boat Shows. There may be a few entertaining missteps along the way, but we are a group of diverse, talented, creative people. We WILL find ways to share our passion. Who knows, maybe we’ll finally be able to get that boat done before the next in-water boat show…
