Runaway Boat Wrecks Havoc At Glebe Point Races.
September 7, 1967
We found this cool front page story in the Northumberland News the other day. YUP! Runaway Boat Wrecks Havoc…. Have you connected the dots yet? It’s okay, but for me, this might as well have been a winning lottery ticket. Okay not the 1 Billion dollar one. Maybe a 100K one. Okay, maybe a Scratcher win. … I am sounding like Maxwell Smart now. Okay, can we just move on from the jokes? Yes. Why am I having a conversation with myself here? I can just delete this dribble. Anyway. Here is the article, and an update on ZIP! The Beside the Barn Find. We are in the process to try and have her ready for the Reedville Show on Sept 9, 2023. YES! Hold on I need to get out the calculator… Wait.. In the meantime, I would like to thank Ryan Rogers for the Article, and The Northern Neck Historical Society for finding a perfect copy from there archives. WHAT? 56 Years ago. WOW.

Close up from Ryan Rogers Xerox copy

I did some cleaning up and added color to define it better. Thats Tiffany Yachts Building in the background. These races were a big deal here. Lots of bragging rights.

Same exact spot, photo yesterday. NOTE, the larger building burned in a fire about 12 years ago, but this is the spot as a reference.
Ernest Rogers AKA Ting A Ling… Best nickname EVER! Being towed in. Ryan Rogers who had the Xerox article is his TingA Lings son. Below that image is ZIP’s damage

ZIP, yesterday. Getting ready. Stripper, and a wire brush and sanding. Oh and carb cleaner! Note the repair from Haynie Products repaired in 1967.

Her colors are still there. We are flipping her over today to get the bottom done.

Mr B is on top of the job as always. He has an eye for detail… The other eye is for Squirrels and cats.
Here is the story on Zip from a while back.

Tommy Beatley and the Little Racer beside the barn
And Here is the story on how she was named. It’s insane!

ZIP in the HQ spa with Yip Yap, and B in the background
And a reminder

And now we know the rest of the story. Great find!
Looking good but inquiring minds would like to know what paint stripper that you used and just what was the carb cleaner used for
Syd, in the past I have used a stripper called “Aircraft Stripper” that is/was available at a local auto parts store. It worked well on metal as well as aluminum.
Very cool to find a story about the very day that Zip was damaged!
Carb cleaner gets into the small hard to reach areas fast
That is a cool story, and it is great to have photos of the event too! Being a big fan of Mr. B, the photo of him helping out brings a smile to my face! Thanks!
B’s keen eyes
That could be it! He always seems to be looking out for where the fun is happening!
Looking at the picture of Ting A Lings boat. That is a 1960 V4 75 hp Evinrude on the back. That little boat had to be nothing but fast!! Cool story. It is always neat to know the history of a boat.
