It’s Confirmed, There Was A Show In Hessel. We Have Proof!
Well, here we are doing our journalistic due diligence. Three different sources have confirmed that in fact there was a Hessel Show. Ya, I know, we all know there was, and has been and will always be. But I have three reports so it is official now. It was not some sort of Russian AI event. It was actually real. There is yesterdays report, and now A huge thanks to fellow Woody Boaters Mark Schallip and Jim Staib for the reports. I have separated them so as to not confuse folks. Here is Marks!
It was a rainy, windy day in Hessel on Saturday. However the turnout for the 46th annual Le Cheneaux Island Boat Show was a huge success. Over 140 beautiful wooden, and classic boats were in attendance. As always, there was a good turnout of spectators. It seems like those who live, summer, or visit Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula. Do not let a little rain and wind dampen their spirits. As in the past 45 years. It was a good show.

THE END!
A week prior we were in the Boats on the Boardwalk show and it was hot! While there we talked about the upcoming Hessel show and hoped it would be a little cooler – be careful what you wish for! All week long the weather forecast for Hessel for the show day was dismal so I was greatly surprised to see how many boats and spectators showed up – a great testament to our sport/hobby. The morning was pleasant, but cool and windy, and the docks were packed. By the afternoon the horizontal rain showed up in waves with patches of sun in between but the show went on and by haul out time it was sunshine again. Once again kudos to the organizers and support staff, especially the launch/retrieve crew, for the outstanding job they do.
For this show the launch ramp is right in the middle of the show and people line up to watch launch/retrieve so you have to “run the gauntlet” with an audience. At retrieval they were shouting out scores – I didn’t medal on my attempt.
As I am reflecting on the show over my morning coffee I would like to put out to people in our sport/hobby that if you have never entered a show please do! It doesn’t matter about the size of boat or the shape it is in – people still want to see them!
If you do enter, however, please remember to bring extra dock lines and at least 2-3 oversized fenders!
We were there and thankfully comfortable on a nasty day. Plan was to use Heritage as the HQ and that worked well. As did the Bloody Mary bar. No pics but we were in Hessel for almost two weeks while passing through. Boat photo by Alex a day or so after.
Popular item on a cold day.
Yep!
Show was great and always fun to catch up with old friends too!
Oh, and I brought home a souvenir from the show from old friends………..!!!!!
Patti made us drive her car because it doesn’t have a hitch. Well, good to know that’s not a deterrent for me!😄
What’s her name?
His current name is “Benny”.
Thanks for using my report Matt. After Davids great report yesterday. I thought I had been “blown out of the water”. It was good to see my pictures and story. You gotta love that amphib Mustang. It is a real crowd pleaser. I agree with tparsons. Launching, and retrieving in front of a bunch of people with the wind blowing is VERY frustrating. However I didn’t let the lawn chair captains bother me, we just got it done. Thanks again to all the volunteers.
Thanks to Mark, Jim & Matt for the photos & story. And to Mark for confirming that the Mustang in the water was not a sad incident. My dad used to have a Mustang boat – a 1967 Correct Craft model.
Were there any outboard powered boats at the show?
Yes there were outboard powered boats there Walt. This section gets bigger every year .
Thanks Mark, I’m an outboard kinda’ guy. I’ve got a 15hp ‘rude like the one on that teal Penn Yan.
Nice picture of a 21ft. Cobra, it’s probably one of the most original Cobra’s in existence!
Thanks to spell check it should have been resto-mod.
I love boat names https://youtu.be/uknX5mIRSX4
