It’s Friday, I Should Get Out There. No Really, Like GO!
St Micheals this weekend?
This weekend is the big St Micheals show, and I want to be there, I should be there, but I can’t even get a boat in the water, I preach and yet don’t seem to follow my own advice. Somehow, other stuff always seems to be more important. And no, not procrastinate important. Or, as in my other case, everything about getting out there requirers doing things before I can just go. Batteries, clean up, paint, bottom scraping.
Belt and blade replace, forget about the deck wheel.
This past week I had 3 riding mowers unuseable. Belts, switches etc. Yes, 3 Riding mowers. Three properties, oh they are not nice new Mowers, so let that fantasy go. And the parts place is an hr away. Leave at 6AM, get to the place, get the stuff, and return home before 9 and the meetings. Oh and Woody Boater before 6AM. I am not in any way complaining, just how it all just seems to take away any free time.
There is a downside to owning many boats, and other fun stuff. It all needs to be kept up, and used. Which I do, it’s just at some point it all gets kinda overwhelming to get it all going. But if I am honest with myself, which I try not to be, I enjoy spinning plates. At least I think I do, oh I hate it while I am doing it, but… it’s all part of the coo coo coco puff brain that I am stuck with. I have deadline dedication, and not having a boat in the water during the July 4th is not good. A deadline. So this weekend, I am going in, out, and about the water. I hope.

Even if you have to drive there you should go to the St.Micheals show.
To Do List:
1) Charge marine battery.
2) Go to boat show. Get inspired.
3) Launch boat.
4) Go For Sunset Boat Ride. (“the varnish is glowing, the water is gold”). Free the soul.
5) Everything else.
Got the new hoist canopy a couple of weeks ago, put it on and finally got the boat in the water last Saturday. Nothing but either rain, high winds or both since then on Keuka. Maybe this afternoon……………..
Matt, I was dealing with the same situation, but it wasn’t stuff that I could personally control. It’s like rescue work for me never ended at retirement. I am always trying to step in to help. I simplified MY life a bit, and it is making the other “stuff” that I think is important, more enjoyable and easier to accomplish. I still miss the boats though!
I feel your pain. Along with a lot of cool things comes a lot of work. This work takes time, and the older we get the more time it takes to do things. Let that grass grow. Learn how to walk by things that need done on your way to the dock. Prioritize ! Like you said Get pout there.

I’m in the same boat. Now I see where they got that phrase; one Hustler zero turn with effed up carb in basement waiting for rebuild, trim push mower carb running rich for no reason, customers water heater repair somehow takes precedence over my own shower valve replacement,,,I could go on for a page. Boat trailer waiting for 4 wheel bearing repack/replacement.
Staff. You need staff. That’s the only answer. And by the way you should have a gardener who keeps those lawns immaculate and the flower beds neat. Delegate Matt. Get staff and delegate. You have to solve your time conundrum because you can’t keep taking on new stuff but not find new time. That’s my Drs Prescription for you.
I really like the idea of hiring staff. How do you start that process? I have always been the ‘handyman’ around the house and enjoy working on things and building things. Like you said, Matt, that’s part of my DNA. But everything is backing up and I don’t ever get to enjoy the toys because I am constantly doing maintenance or repairs on everything. Gotta make some changes, and finding a handyman seems like a good idea.
