Kentucky Wonder Reports in From? mmmm I Wonder Where He Is Reporting In From?

April and John Heiderich’s 1949 Century Seamaid slices through the wake of another boat during Friday’s Poker Run.
Fellow Woody Boater Kentucky Wonder reports in from this weekend’s 11th Annual Bluegrass Chapter ACBS Rendezvous in.. drum roll please….Lake Cumberland State Park Dock in Kentucky. This year’s event featured nearly 30 boats from across Kentucky and also from Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina.

Kerplunk, a 1948 25′ Chris-Craft Sportsman burbles along Lake Cumberland during the 11th Annual Bluegrass Chapter ACBS Rendezvous. Owned by Jack Beatley, Kerplunk won both the Peoples’ Choice award, receving the most votes from onlookers at the docks, and also the Best Utility award from the other captains.

Brian Conroy’s 1961 Boston Whaler goes airborne as he jumps the wake left by April and John Heiderich’s Century. Conroy said he felt like a teenager again after a fun afternoon on the water.

Rodger and Lisa Brown blast across Lake Cumberland after the show portion of the Bluegrass Rendezvous on Saturday. Lisa Marie, their 1939 Gar Wood 19′ Custom Runabout, took the Best Runabout award at the event.

Ski Daddy, a 1958 Helton owned by Robert Hedrick, has been owned by the same family since purchased new. Robert is the grandson of the original owner.

Scott Sneddon rides in the “Princess Seat” of a 1949 Greavette during Friday’s Poker Run. The third seat gets the name because it’s the smoothest ride in the boat, and also because it has its own liquor cabinet.

Visitors check out the collection of boats gathered for the 11th Annual Bluegrass Chapter ACBS rendezvous at the Lake Cumberland State Dock. Four days of perfect weather, a great assortment of boats, and lots of interested onlookers made for a fun weekend.

A set of horns adorns Brian Keen’s freshly-restored Chris-Craft. Keen received the Roman Coppola Stewardship Award for his restoration effort. No bull.

Rick Griffieth, left, and John Williams shake hands while Linda Gilker looks on Saturday. Griffieth is standing in his very original 1979 Sea Ray.

And todays header is Art Hampton waves as his 1958 Chris-craft Capri accelerates past the photo boat during Friday’s Poker Run.

Thanks Mr Wonder! As usual your reports are great.
Looks like a fabulous setting with a great selection of boats. I’ll have to add that show to my bucket list.
Thanks, Kentucky Wonder!
I have never done a “Poker Run” on the water, guess i will have to pay attention to what show do them and actually show up at one with a boat.
Thanks Kentucky Wonder!
Great story as always!
Wow! Greavette’s, Conroy’s, great weather and smooth water….. I shoulda been there! Looks like a great show and fun had bay all.
…. and just wonderin’ how those horns on BK’s CC work with a cover?
Like my wife’s horns; they come off at night…
Do the horns get replaced by a brilliant halo?
Wait. I always thought we preferred the halo by day and the horns at night.
Yes they do; the whole room glows when she takes it, loops, them off.
Great report KW. Chad, I too need to add this event to my bucket list. Looks like a fun time by all. Thanks!
Definitely a great show. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the facilities are excellent.
If you’ve never been to Lake Cumberland, it is the houseboat capital of the world and there are some amazing crafts on the docks.
It was a great time had by all. I finally made it to the water with my ’69 CC Ski boat after a 3 year restoration and had a blast.
Thanks to Kentucky Wonder for the pics!
Andy! I got a photo of your boat, but forgot the model, so it didn’t get included in the initial report. Also, you are not listed in the ACBS directory to call. Sign up, dude!
I told my wife what you said was the best moment of the whole show – blowing water all over the “Best of Show” winner. She was horrified. Pretty funny, actually.
Thanks KW. I spent all weekend not knowing that you were the infamous Kentucky Wonder….how did that happen?
That was a classic moment to say the least.
Andy, I just have to ask… Why the tan interior? You did everything else on the restoration back to factory, but then tan vinyl??
Because there is not another single piece of Red Nautolex flooring to be found on Earth. My floor was pretty faded, so I opted to change the interior to tan to mimic the 2008 CC Lancer GT concept. Also, that red interior gets so hot that I was tired of burning myself. This is more of a Resto Mod project.
We are “in the same boat” if you will… I have a 10×24 inch patch in my floor that I had to seal somehow so I painted it black… Now I have been searching for a flooring solution for 3 years!! I am leaning toward replacing the floor with composite decking that is modeled and colored to look like teak. Would be a huge deduction in points but I am not building a “show queen”, like you I am building a user friendly play machine!
Looks like another show for my bucket list…Maybe rent a houseboat and spend a week there…
I’m thinking Cumberland will be added to my list of shows next year as well! Looks like a beautiful lake, good people, GORGEOUS boats and tons of hospitality.
Thanks KW. Nicely done.
And a beautiful spot for a show.
Love Kerplunk. As I do every 25′ Sportsman.
But the Greavette’s rear bar is an awesome option.
Tough to top that.
But wait. A 25′ Sportsman has a huge dash. Big enough for several draught taps. And there you have it. We’ve stumbled into the best of both worlds.
Saturday night was spent sitting in and around that awesome Greavette and let me just say that there is no way that boat is only 20′ long.
Lisa and I have been at the Bluegrass Chapter’s Rendezvous for several years now, each one is better than the last. Super boating people who really know how to have fun, and Lake Cumberland is a boater’s paradise. Y’all come next year! We’ll bring the moonshine!
Any of y’all remember the pre-event to the first Coeur d’ Alene ACBS annual and 25 couples were paired up on five 55 foot houseboats on Lake Roosevelt for five days with woodies for tenders.
Carla…You were at the show….How did you miss that part ??
Might be fun to do that kind of thing again…
Another boat I’ve never seen before is BettyAnn, owned by Rob Selin. “Betty Ann” (named for his mom who passed away a little less than a year ago) was built circa 1986 in Plymouth Mass. by professional boat builder John Karbott. The boat is a Glen “L” Design called a Bo Jest. It is powered by a 25 hp. Yamaha four stroke. Very much in original condition.
Very cool! John Karbott was my boat-building instructor about 15 years ago. I enrolled in one of his week-long Wooden Boat courses. We built a small lapstrake skiff. He is a great guy and a very talented craftsman.
