Late Live-ish From Milwaukee

Thanks to fellow Woody Boater Jack Schneiberg reporting in from The Greater Milwaukee Boat Show. “It opened yesterday to zero temperatures and snow. Good ole’ Wisconsin Weather. Each year the Glacier Lakes Chapter of the ACBS is invited by the organizers to set up a booth display of classic and vintage boats and motors. We are a very popular exhibit and while the crowds were a bit thin due to weather yesterday – today the temps are forecast to boom into the 20’s and we expect a good attendance.” Thanks Jack here are some of the images that he sent.

Attached are a selection of pictures courtesy of David Doyle of Silver Lake in West Bend, Wisconsin.

Above: David Doyle’s ‘70’s vintage Cottage Racer. Dave stumbled across this little racer at the local Habitat for Humanity resale store and bought it for $200.00. A total strip, stain, new paint and varnish resulted in this sharp little speedster. Equipped with a Mark 20 from Dave’s stable of vintage Mercury Motors, Dave has yet to identify the make or model of this boat. Regular use is planned for this coming summer on Silver Lake.

This past year Dave was also able to add a second Switzer Craft Baby Bullet to his collection. This boat was found under the porch of a cottage in Northern Wisconsin. The hull and bottom were sound. New decks, hardware, paint and varnish; along with a Mark 7 short shaft now adorn the hull. It is a 1953.

Paul & Tim Mason ‘s very rare 1939 Century Deluxe Sedan Utility. Powered by the original Gray Marine 4-75, this boat sports all new wood, interior, bottom, and refurbished hardware. Extreme care was taken to return this boat to original condition including the material used on the padded cabin roof.

Another view of “Relic”, Mason’s 1939 Century Deluxe Sedan Utility.

Walter Wilde’s 1957 Dunphy Sunfish. Walt is looking for a white and gold Johnson Javelin to replace the newer Mercury. This boat was in storage for many years and Walt recently acquired it from the estate of Frank Petran – one of the founders of the Glacier Lake’s ACBS Chapter.

Brightworks Boat Works of Madison, Wisconsin are showing this very fine example of an early 50’s Chris Craft Rivera.

Wil Vidal’s 1940 Chris Craft Sportsman 22. Fine example in which I’ve spent a few hours this past summer. Note the neat Wicker accessory chairs.

John Baumann’s vintage and beautiful green canoe.

Brightwork’s Boat Work’s newest project is this runabout “The Capital”. Planned for launch this coming summer. Wish I knew more about this project.

Lance Erhke built this electric powered runabout for his grandchildren to put round in. The boat named “Lilly” draws a lot of attention wherever Lance shows it.

This past summer Mark Willis of Custom Boat Service found a ’55 Century Coronado in a barn in Door County, Wisconsin. This is the Cal Connell Cadillac Crusader from the Coronado. Currently, the boat is in Mark’s shop having had the interior, hardware, and finished removed. Mark is contemplating his next move on the Coronado. All that white paint hid a few sins from the previous restoration.

Jack, thanks for allowing the rest of us to attend virtually. Those little outboard racers are looking mighty tempting in mid-January!

I love waking up in the morning, getting a cup of coffee and clicking on the Woody boater site to see great old wooden boats. especially Switzercrafts. Nice work Dave Doyle.
