New Zealand Classic Boat Show Breaks All Records

, ,

That is one yummy engine.

The New Zealand Classic Boat show breaks all records with 158 boats and a crowd of two thousand drawn to St Arnaud. The real fun part of this event is the mind blowing diversity.  Which is the coolest part of any show. You go to see in person stuff you won’t see anyplace else. A huge shout out to Steve Lapkin and Duster for the reports. Ka Pai!  Not an easy task when you are in the show. The late night reports after all that excitement is tough. Kia ora to you all.

This show always surprises – This years Jens Hansen Trophy for the best vessel overall went to a 1961 UK-built speedboat, ‘Robin’. The 15ft boat is an Albatross Continental restored in 2023 by the current owners, the Green family of Oamaru.

Great to see them all getting wet. Thanks Steve and Matt for taking us to New Zealand!

I have never seen a cooling fan on a marine engine. Robin is not air cooled, is it?

      Hello Greg,
Robin is water cooled with a double skin section on the alloy floor. The fan is to aid the cooling and move gases out of the engine bay area I Believe.
It is a point of much debate among owners some choosing to remove the fans

I;m glad I got to see some good Lapkin spray! 158 b0ats, 2000 people. No docks, that had to be interesting. As I have said earlier, Looks like a good time. Thanks again Steve, Duster and Matt. You have warmed my cold Sunday morning.

I was curious about that engine in the first photo. It’s a Coventry Climax. The company first came into being (1930″s) making engines for portable fire pumps and later marine engines and other applications. That’s a flywheel forward installation. It’s water cooled but I do wonder why the fan was left on. Maybe out of convenience because the belt pulley was integral to the fan with no other good reason to make a new pulley?
