Not So Quiet Riot!
Sometimes a perceived bad day for Woody Boating, can be an amazing opportunity to get some amazing photos. Such was the day yesterday. Saturday at the 2014 ACBS International Show. We got about 1500 photos and will share through out the week. We tried very hard to get out on the water as much as possible. And folks were easy to oblige. This show was very active and boats were racing around with great joy. No one was having more fun than long time fellow Woody boater Chris Bullen and his amazing 1995 Clarion 25′ GC-.

Finlay on the last run of the day as folks were pulling boats out of the water with three foot rollers, Chris came up to me and asked if I wanted to go out for a short ride

HELL YA! I gave the camera to Beth Lepping and she did an amazing job capturing two fun passes in a dance of raw power and raw nature!

Ok thats better. Did i mention that I was soaking by now! Note mother nature is now sending in the air force!
And a nice calm 30 mph slow down to the ramp! The day was over! And the memories were just beginning. Thanks Chris for a perfect ending to a perfect weekend.

The hosts did a fantastic job and all the ACBS crew put on a heck of a show. The dock setup was as nice as I have seen, the handicap parking was super convenient and most importantly they did a great job with the food. The Skaneateles country club fed us two great dinners. Friday’s auction dinner included rack of lamb, sautéed scallops, roasted brisket and more. The food was accompanied by a speech from none other than Gaius Baltar. I didn’t really understand much of his speech, but I think he was saying something about the hybrid being the future of ACBS. Weird I know, but definitely entertaining.
Woohoo! FYI for the other Apple beta testers, Chrome for iPhones seems to be working much better with woodyboater.
Back to the show, Saturday was warm but not as sunny as Friday, and there was a steady lite breeze from the south all day. The local crowds showed up in impressive numbers and it was great to see a lot of young people and kids walking the docks.
The boating on Saturday rocked, and the crowed really appreciated seeing the boats run. Whenever someone went out, like Matt in this story, the long outside dock was jam packed with show guests snapping pictures.
Saturday night was the awards night dinner featuring prime rib, and an excellent and well prepared asparagus side. The crowed was a tiny bit older than the one that had been on the docks earlier in the day. The awards went to some very deserving individuals, including two awards to Rich Lepping for the best Falls Flyer ever to leave the Midwest and for leading the ACBS chapter that had the most fun in 2014. The Century SeaMaid Mike Green restored not only floated at the docks got three days without the assistance of a pump, it also won a well deserved best of show restored. The best of the best, best in show preserved award of course went to someone from the Keuka Lake, Mike Jakubowski and his Garwood Blythe Spirt. There was some sort of hall of fame induction as well.
The iOS 8 auto incorrect kêÿbœrèd is driving me nutz. The Century floated at the docks FOR three days. Keuka Lake is simply know as Kueka Lake, not “the Keuka Lake”. They must have cheated out and hired Ohio State graduates as programmers.

The more I see the more I wish I had made the trip.
I suspect I will be in agony by the end of the week.
Together with Cobourg Kid, we have been working on a story about the folks who produce these amazing Clarion wooden boats up in Ontario, Canada. But we were always concerned that the purists would run us out of town, so we never published the story.
Maybe the time is right (providing the purists put away their swords and torches for a day. Ha. – Texx
Texx, I was very impressed with Chris’ Clarion when we ran with him on the poker run at Muskoka last year. A story about Clarion boats would be great.
We are told there was asparagus for dinner but no pictures of Carla presenting those Hall of Fame Awards ??
Who decides what is really important here ???
The “really important” reporter was seated so far back in the room, he would have needed a Hubble telescope to get a picture of Carla.

“Riot” is an amazing boat and she’s no “boathouse Queen”! With beautiful lines that draw attention everywhere Riot does not disappoint on the water as she is quite quick. Chris is an active member (in more than one club) and drives ‘Riot” as much as possible in all weather conditions…and at 25’ Riot sometimes requires both skill and confidence.
Chris (and Julie) are very approachable people that are always willing to pitch in, and they are great people to relax with. The combination of Chris, Julie & Riot stands to be amongst the best ambassadors for woodyboating you can find. 🙂

I am back in Penn Yan with the Penn Yan. So, last night we pulled the boat out and we were going to leave it at the house Rich and Paul rented. The trailer was working perfectly and we only had about a mile and a half to go, what could possibly go wrong? Well, Mike Jakubowski sees Paul Harrison getting into the passenger seat and runs over waiving his arms and shouting warnings. I assured him the trip was short and we should make it even with Paul on board. We did make it, but when I picked up the boat this morning, I discovered that the right tail light was out, when both had been working when we left the ramp. Next time I am listening to Mike and my better judgement, and Paul will have to walk back!
thanks for the kind words Sean. Matt, thanks for going out on the crazy run. I thought you just maybe the only one willing to go. We had to move the boat to the otherside of the ramp we just took a few detours but 70MPH! i think wind speed is Knots. better take 30mhp off that. Fun day thanks for all the shots. I agree with the positive comments above the club did a great job. It was a great show at a great location, however it was too close to those darn outlet malls. hauling a boat means a big truck with too much space, better fly to Minnesota. no thats not going to happin.
