RyboRendezvous #5 – A Celebration Of Classic Rybovich Boats This Weekend In Stuart, Florida

, ,

This weekend folks from around the country will gather at Sunset Bay Marina in Stuart, Florida for the big RyboRendezvous #5 – A celebration of the classic Rybovich boat marque. These are truly amazing wooden boats with a truly remarkable history dating back over 90 years.

In case you missed it, we ran a story about the history of Rybovich Sportfishing Boats back in August, which included some information on the recently published book RYBOVICH – by Pat Rybovich. Just like the boats themselves, the huge 600 page, 20 pound book is spectactular. We recently received our copy of the book which you can learn more about below, after the information about the upcoming Rybovich event in Florida.

THE CLASSIC RYBO LINE-UP

The line-up kicks off with the oldest Rybo in existence: the 1949 Rybo Hull #2 commissioned by Al Capone’s second in command. Most of the Rybo’s were splashed in the ‘50s and ‘60s including a number of the highly coveted Rybo 36-footers. In 1960 Tommy Rybovich invented the process of cold-molding and the world’s first cold-molded boat, Frisky will be among the historic Rybo’s on display. Country music star Alan Jackson’s Chieftain is always a head-turner along with the Rybovich brother’s largest creation, the breathtaking 75-foot yachtfisherman, Shark. And to cap off the show, a “Cubavich” will be part of the fun—a Rybovich clone built in 1950s Havana.

RYBOVICH – The Book

The massive 20 lb – 600 page RYBOVICH book by Pat Rybovich (daughter of designer/builder Tommy Rybovich) covers every aspect of the Rybovich marque, including the entire history from the early days of boat building in Florida, to the 1950’s & 1960’s when Roosevelt & Hemingway sparked “Big Game Hunting” (which became a quest to catch ‘monsters of the deep’ in Bimini) and Rybovich was the first to build a boat specially-created for the new sport. (You can click on the images of the book to enlarge them)

The historical photographs take us back to a time when sportfishing in south Florida and Cuba became very popular, and attracted business tycoon’s and celebrity’s to the area.

Sportfishing tournaments welcomed the classic, purpose built Rybovich boats over the years.

The photography throughout the book is fantastic, which truly captures the essence of the Rybovich marque from the early days right up to today’s boats which are still designed and built in south Florida.

It’s fun to learn how these Rybovich boats have evolved over the years and in the book Pat includes an detailed listing of each boat with a history of ownership and names throughout the life of each classic Rybo.

As technology continues to evolve in the digital age of computers, and as the great debate continues regarding printed media vs electronic media, I can say that there is nothing quite like the experience of browsing through the pages of a book like RYBOVICH to learn and absorb the remarkable history and character that Pat Rybovich has captured in these beautiful wooden boats.

You can learn more about Rybovich Boats by Clicking Here, and for information on the book or to learn more about the big RyboRendezvous #5 you can Click Here.

Thanks Pat for sharing your story with us here at Woody Boater!
