Troy Reports In From Lake Cobbosseecontee!
We met at the Hippler estate at 9 AM for coffee and donuts.

This is what Jason calls a Continental Breakfast. I think Darryl is taking a nap.
Charlie and the boys had three boats in the water, including Electra a 1940 Barrel Back with a Chrysler 440 under the hatch.

The real treat of the weekend came Sunday morning with a Woody Rendezvous on Lake Cobbosseecontee just outside of Augusta Maine. I will in no way try to compete with the wonderful story Kent O. Smith Jr did last July 25th ( https://www.woodyboater.com/
The other two Hippler boats a twin engine one off Correct Craft and a 1958 CC Continental (also with a Chrysler 440)
After stuffing ourselves on Hippler hospitality we loaded up and headed out on the lake.

I chose to take a rare opportunity to ride in the rear cockpit of Larry and Ellen Jamieson’s BEAUTIFUL 1932 CC triple. What a pleasure that was.

Note the gold star on Hornet. I don’t know if that is rare, but I have never seen another one.
By the end of the day we had sun burns and Sam had gotten her hands on my hat.

In conclusion I will just say if you get up here to the ANE send a shout out on Woodyboater Connection and we may just be able to put together a Rendezvous in your honor.

I LOVE to see the sister Continentals riding together.
We almost had a Capri of this style land on the lake this spring, but it ended up going to California. There are others in the works though.
Those Continentals are favorites of mine. A utility with style.

Later in the afternoon we loaded up YORKTOWN with some relatives from Connecticut and Friends from Texas for a swim in Horseshoe Cove.
That is one of the things I Love about these utilities, just count the people in there.
You need to order more woodyboater hats. Looks like Darryl could use one too.
Thanks for the great article and photos–wish I were there to join in the rumble of the woodies! Charlie Hippler is a legend on Cobbossee, the guy who started it all for me as a little boy on the lake back in the ’50s and 60s watching “Big ‘n Fast,” (that one-off Correct Craft) and Charlie’s many other boats. It “launched” for me in the mid-1980s with a Chris Craft ’60 ski boat that I kept on Cobbossee for my all-to-brief annual vacations. Never lost the bug and I’m currently almost finished with the restoration of “Jack,” a 1958 Mercury Sabre named for my late uncle who introduced me to boating at a young age on Cobbossee, George B. “Jack” Elliott of Belle Island! “Jack” will operate on Payette Lake in McCall, Idaho, but will fly the Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club burgee in the spirit of the lake we’d rather be on if we didn’t live so far away!
Barry you should come back for a visit.
I am a little surprised we don’t know each other, but since I was born in ’62 my real time on Cobbossee was more the ’70s and early ’80s.

Thanks for the response, and I thought the same thing (Why don’t I know this Troy guy)!!?? Actually, I come to Cobbossee every year and have all my life. Arrive August 9 for a week and will be staying with Art and Judy Danley (whom you know as Art told me this morning you called him about the above). My family (Elliotts–cousins) have owned Belle Island forever and I spent childhood summers on that island! My parents owned a cottage next to Birchwood for many years. Art and I have been friends since childhood and Randy Gannett is a friend as well and used to take care of my Chris Craft back in the day when when the old marina was open. Hope to see you when I’m on the lake in a few weeks!

We are on the north end on Welch’s Point. My dad used to have a red and white Super Cub on floats. Art told me one time that it was Dad’s influence that got him into seaplanes.
Heck we are almost family.

Troy, thanks for posting your story. Looks like a fun day. I enjoyed the Continental Breakfast joke. It was intentional, right? He was eating in a Continental? Good one.
You mentioned rained-out and winded-out fireworks in the NE. At least the locals had the sense to postpone things. A few years ago, here in Petoskey, MI, they had a very foggy night of the 4th. The officials decided to shoot off the fireworks anyway. $1,000’s worth went up into the fog and totally disappeared. Duh!
