Thanks to Alex Watson for sharing his last Gasp up in Hessel Michigan. this could be one of the more horrific photos of the season. Alex couldn’t just share a fun boat out boating. No… The photo of him being towed in is the perfect Last gasp photo. The pain only amplified by the fact that he had a Pontoon boat tow him in. Dear god man! Oh my. I hope it is an easy fix, and not new engine time. The good news is he has 9 months to get the XK running again, and if that fails he has another boat to use.
So sorry Alex. At least it’s fiberglass and not a woody being towed by the toon.
Did he send any details? Did something break or was he out of fuel? He’ll probably claim it’s a stiff line and he is pushing the toon.
If your drinking beer while being towed in is it still BUI? Just sayin’ – would have been a great opportunity just to turn lemons into lemonade.
Well at least someone was around to tow him. I went out fro a run Friday just to “warm up the oil” before pumping it out and found myself the only boat on the lake and nobody around.
Actually though I may prefer to use my emergency oar over a tow from a pontoon boat.

Years ago when I would sail Lake Michigan in my 25′ Folk Boat I always made sure that I had options if something were to go wrong, such as having an outboard motor if there was no wind or if there was a problem with the sails. Now that I am driving a stink pot I have few backup options other than to go out with other boaters that I can count on to tow me in if there is an engine problem. I have two oars and an anchor with a long rode but that is not going to get me back to the dock.
Am I turning into an old fuddy duddy or curmudgeon or do others have the same concerns? If so how is this concern handled?

Damn! talk about a hard luck story. We could just say one picture is worth a thousand words.
In his “Harrison-esque” way, Ol Alex figured there was enough gas in the tank. But he was wrong.
When one is used to driving a Mighty Arabian with a thirsty 440 in it, one is always aware of how much fuel is in the boat.

Yep. Ran out of fuel. Misread the gauge. Thought it said 1/4 left when it was on empty.
I have a left eye cataract that developed after I had emergency surgery for a torn retina a year ago. Everything in that eye is blurry. And that gauge is to my left.
Surgery is scheduled for Feb 4.
So, though Mayer was correct in pointing out my mistake, how cruel of him to make fun of this vision-impaired, aging man. For shame!
However, I’m a forgiving man. I’ll let bygons be bygons for a 6-pack of some tasty Oregon brew.

Having done both, any tow is better than a 3 mile paddle.
At least the boat fix is easy. What did you do to get your torn retina?
