Adopt A Boat, Don’t Buy A New One!
We will spare you the Sarah Mclachlan music right now, but the point is the same. if you are in the market for a new boat! Going to plastic boat shows and sniffing the toxic chemicals of thin fiberglass. You may consider adopting a wonderful classic Woody Boat! that’s right. These boats for sale out there have long lives and have brought true joy to there previous families.
Each boat has its own personality and history. So in a very real way you are adopting her. Some may have been abused and require some love, some have been brought up in fancy homes but neglected, and need to be socialized. Some may have missing parts, and thats okay. But your perfect soul first mate is out there. She is sitting in a barn, garage, or sadly a back yard out behind the shed, wearing tattered blue tarps.
Sometimes it’s just time to let go. And another loving family is needed to care for and raise the boat.
I am not sure how a family just lets a family member like their woody boat go? But SHIP HAPPENS. Been there and done that. but I have always wanted to make sure my Woody Boat goes to a loving family.
There are plenty of boat shelters here on Woody Boater to adopt from. After all you have all winter to make your new old boat, part of her new family. Just imagine how happy your new baby will feel when you tell her, WE ARE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD in the spring.. Shhhhhh, as in Disney ish.. Like 45 minutes west of Disney. Trust me Goofy will be there! And plenty of Micky Mouse stuff. Wooohoooo. Only 6 months until Lake Dora! Hit it Sarah!
Today for one day only, you can put your boat you want to adopt in the comment section. It may take a bit since anything with a link gets held up in a Que to be aproved. Please, no overpriced un realistic crap! Thats what ebay is for. This is for people that want to find a loving home for their boats.
American Beauty is up for adoption.
Thanks Matt, here is one I really don’t want to part with but with 2 kids in collage and already having a 25′ Constellation it need to go to a new family.
Great running turn key 1966 Lyman 25′. Boat runs and drives great. New V-berth cushions and full canvas top. Brand new custom Phoenix Trailer. Fish finder. V8 Engine. If your looking for a reliable and great looking lapstrake wood boat this is it. No rot and professionally maintained.
Price would probably help. Was asking $14,000 but if someone calls today and wants it i’ll sell it for $13,000 take them for a boat ride and winterize it for them.
Mike – If I didn’t already have two similar size Sea Skiffs, I’d own this. I can’t say enough about the usability, versatility and fun these boats provide at exceptionally reasonable prices. In my opinion, these lapstrakes represent the best value in the entire classic boating hobby.
What kind of modern boat can you buy for $13K? This is not much money for any kind of practical boat, let alone a classic.
1962 Century Coronado Gull Wing up for adoption.
Originally delivered to Providence, Rhode Island, her original owner purchased her in 1962 and shipped her to Maine where she spent her entire life until the summer of 2014. She’s very original, but the bottom has been updated as necessary. She has had a replacement A&A interior put in her. This was the only year the Coronado had a red, white, and black interior. The boat was re-varnished in 2014 and is in great user condition. Powered with her original Gray Marine “Fireball” V-8, based on the 327 AMC V-8. Also has a full mooring cover that comes with it.
The boat comes with a custom waterline cover and dual axle trailer that has 5 brand new tires. $32,900.00
I love the woody classics but sometimes we come across classic plastic in need of a home as well. Our friend John R in VA spotted this pair of sad eyes peaking out of a shed near Woodyboaterville. He called me up as a potential foster parent and a few calls later she was “rescued” (the day after the Reedville show). Turns out there may only be 6 or less of this Correct Craft Sunrays left ! Tucked in her new home, she is in for a long rehabilitation and currently going through delousing (yes a bug bomb was used) as well as a birds nest and squirrel tail removal. More to follow-
Eric – big oil can guy Bill Anderson in southern Illinois may be a potential adoptive parent for your classic plastic. Can one put twin outboards on it?
It came with an evinrude starflite 90s. Transom needs to be redone so if the dip in the center were made straight across, I think twins will work. I think Bill has a “ray” for sale but can certainly check if we don’t keep it…..thx
Great story. Thanks for taking the time to share your journey.
Eric’s lovely wife Jill will, I trust, forgive me for telling him about yet another fiberglassic oddball boat….my bad….
He can’t help it he gets all crazy about weird glassics….Lake and Sea etc. but oh how they end up…better than new and just as ugly.
I am Going Boating after a trip to the State Fair of Va. to view the 1200 lbs pumpkins and pure bred chickens…Bethany only wants to go to get her annual corndog….I may be Going Boating solo after that. John inVa.
She’ll get over it, keeps me in the barn…and I did find a new home for the Hydrodyne earlier this year- have fun at the fair, another trade show for me to work next week- thx
As a cheap ass retiree with Dutch heritage, I love the word “free”! Here’s my listing: 1939 Chris Craft 22′ Custom Runabout triple cockpit. Very original boat one of 8 or 9 known to exist out of 24 built. I’m the third owner and have history since new. Original CC LCS engine rebuilt in 1994. Hasn’t been in the water since 2000 or so. We have been the caretakers for over 20 years of arguably the best example of a 1931 Model 99/199 in existence, as restored by the incomparable Wayne Mocksfield. Unfortunately, it is time for her to move on to someone who will care for her in the same way in the future. She was mentioned in the WoodyBoater article on Model 99/199’s and has been seen numerous times at the Lake Hopatcong show. She is listed with Antique Boat America if you would like to take a look.
Here is a boat that I do not really want to part with but space is limited for the winter. It is a 1962 Lyman sleeper 24′. Runs and floats, no rot, but needs a major refinish inside and out. No trailer, but delivery possible. 5k
