As we all sit here now waiting for Fankenstorm to smack us in the face here on the East Coast, I thought I would share something different. I am sitting here soaking in all the internet I can before all our power goes out. We found this shot on eBay under the subject “Vintage Boats” that is worthy of a posting. If you can look beyond the look on the guys face.. and other things. WARNING, do not look to closely at him. Focus on the boat…. What sort of boat is that? Avocado green? Really, couldn’t they just stop at dish washers and fridges with that color?

If it didn’t have the venting panel in the base of the windshield I would say it was a Starcraft. That is as close a guess as I can come up with.
Where did you get that header picture? Is that a pile of boats or what?
It’s Minnetonka Boat Works in Deephaven, MN in the mid 1960s after a tornado. It’s not their main facility in Wayzata. It is a photo that is published very often.

dont laugh. I think it is around a ‘ 67 silverline boat. They came with either an 80 or 120 hp. mercruiser inboard/ outboard engine. had those lower ventilation windows in the windshield. We inherited one, 17’ with the 80 horse. It was a 4 cylinder renault engine. could run for a month on a 12 gal. tank of gas but it would take about 10 minutes to plane pulling a water skier. The green one had dark green vinyl upholstery. In those days plastic boats most often came in odd toned solid colors. green, yellow, red, etc. Dont recall any harvest gold, but maybe so. No accounting for taste, as they say. The 60’s. I believe even cadillac came out with a lime green color around ’65 or so.
They sold for about $3000; made in Minnesota i think.

Hey matt, out of curiousity i just checked and there is this cool silverline boat web site that has all the early brochures, etc. they were made in minnesota, moorehead, it turns out.
We are hopeful the storm wont cause any damage where you are.

Late sixty’s Lund. There’s one on Lake Hopatcong that’s the same color and has that venting windshield. Has an old Mercruiser 120. I think it’s name was Lund- Shell Lake??
Lund Metalcraft, maker of Lund aluminum boats, purchased Shell Lake Boats, Inc. in 1968. Shell Lake made fiberglass boats. Within about three years the Shell Lake name was dropped and the ‘glass boats were badged as Lund. Irv the Liquidator closed the Shell Lake, WI factory in 1980. It had been operating since 1904.

I think the damage in the image on your header came from the Deephaven tornado of May 6, 1965. That night four tornadoes devastated the Twin Cities killing 13 people. The wreckage in the photos was from a marina in Deephaven on Lake Minnetonka. I hate to think about how many of those boats we simply burned or taken to the dump. You folks on the East coast need to batten down your hatches and hang on.
The header is the story today. Thanks for posting the info. How sad for the people and the boats. I think I counted five Rivieras.

Many of the fiberglass boat manufacturers had boats of these colours during the day. SlickCraft had some great colours and designs.
Nothing unusual about this avacado green boat in my eyes.

That same tornado on Lake Minnetonka turned my uncle/aunt/cousin’s house to matchsticks. I was seven and will always remember seeing that beautiful big old house in that state. Had some kind of a root cellar in the basement that the family sat it out in. If I remember correctly, their Sea Skiff and seaplane survived it, even though they travelled some distance.

Of course, he KNOWS what kind of boat that looks like. It’s an early 70’s Century Arabian. Would look even better if they took it out of the box it came in. Oh wait. They did.

Relatives of mine kept an avocado green runabout (I want to say it was a STARCRAFT faux-lapstrake?) with matching vinyl seats and a Mercury “Tower of Power” outboard in their retro boathouse on Green Lake in Wisconsin. I think their house also had avocado green tin siding at that time…
