It’s A Veda Of Course? What The Heck Is A Veda?

It’s A Veda!

Thanks to the newest member of the Antique Boat Center Gang, Ben Pendery for sending us in a different sort of classic. A Veda! OK. You Ask, What’s A Veda? That’s a great question. No really its a great question. Anyone out there in Woodyboaterville know what a Veda is? Are you the Veda expert and just been waiting for someone to ask?

I kinda like it. Never heard of Veda of course, and even if I knew everything about it, the kids would not be impressed.

I think these boats are from a long time ago, in a galaxy far away where this company was founded by a young pod racer, builder and mechanic named Darth …….

Well, OK, now I know there is a Veda. But – other than knowing what some parts of a Veda look like, I’m still no expert. How about a little history – some specifications, a model year, production numbers, etc…….all things a Veda expert should know.

According to Google Veda is a steel pulled luxury yacht. Man if Google doesn’t know what do I do now? Guess I’ll just have to pretend it doesn’t exist. Next story.

And not to alarm anyone any more, but even Bob Speltz books dont have Veda! Is this one of the signs of the apocolipse? Is that how you spell apocoplypse? Apokolips? Topokolips?

Goodmorning, all – a customer recently purchased this boat and the “folklore” that we have on it is as follows: the original owner built these VEDA boats. He built 8 of them (I believe in Ohio) and the one that came to us is 8/8. It is a planked boat with a herring-bone bottom – 19′ long with a 6′ beam. It is powered by a 260 Ford Interceptor. The builder passed away during construction of this one, so we’re limited with the history on these cool little boats. This one had been out of the water since about 1990 – we put it in our soak tank and it had a pretty good bottom – very little leaking. It’s not easy to find information on these, but if anyone has any we’d love to hear it!

With only 8 boats built, if the build history and hull cards happens to come up on e-bay for $1 I could house that until some museum wants it.

What happened to the WATIZIT guy anyway?
(Ooops wrong picture, oh well, guess we will have to live with it.)

If you build your own boat, you get tiered of people coming by and asking “is that a Chris Craft”. Put your own name or brand on it and it solves a lot of those questions, except for the guy that you wait for “ya my uncle had a Veda and it was just like this”. That’s the closest I can come to an explanation and I am sure it is not going to impress my kids. They are past that age unfortunately.

I’m curious if the V may have indicated Van VanBibber (sp). He built a few boats under a different name (can’t remember) in the 40’s and/or 50’s near East St. Louis, IL. There was an article in an older Brass Bell about him and his small, short-lived boat building business.

The Veda is an Italian boat built just outside of Venice by the boatsmith Vinny who came from Valencia. Vinny built very few boats but they were very nice with V-bottoms and V-Drive configurations. The figure head on the logo is of his grandfather, Victor who was married to Venus. Vinny served in the Army until V-J Day and built no more boats due to his vascular injury. He had no children to carry on the craft due to his vasectomy. His other boats were named Veni, Vidi and Vici. Veda in Latin means “a lot of V’s”. Vestis virum reddit.

Wherever it came from doesn’t really matter… What matters is that it is cool as hell!! Someone got themselves a very radical and unique boat for sure!

Off topic: I need those cowl vents!! Those are the same vents use on our ’69 Cavalier Ski Boat and ours are super corroded… After all my winter work repainted and polishing/replacing trim, the cowl vents look awful ;-(. Anyone have any ideas where a person could find this style vent used in the 60’s and possibly into the 70’s???

Actually, In Viking mythology, Veda was the god that one made offerings to when one first launched their new boat. Veda made sure that it floated well, could handle the roughest seas, and would watch over you in the years of sailing ahead. Failing to make offerings, Veda’s brother, Century, would take over your new craft’s fate……

I really dig this thread! Not this much mystery since I bought the supposedly ONE OFF Argentine runabout…..which it turns out is a very rare small boat built by a very large boat Agrentine builder Kennel & Perez…..look em up….built mostly big boats…..my 16 footer is the only one under 19…..really cool….it don’t get no Veda than this….

Inagoddadveda, baby! There’s a bit of everything in that one and I agree – it’s pretty cool. The “mother-in-law” cockpit is about right – well back there… Even the Perko hardware looks to be in pretty good shape. I’d like to see it in person sometime, perhaps next to a ’57 Capri or Continental, just because!

Didn’t think the Veda would cause so much wonderment . This is a 1959 that is 19.5 ft with the fins sticking out the back ‘The 1963 ford 260 c.i. was completely rebuilt . Most of the hardware was put on in the 80’s .So it sat unfinished for some twenty years The interier is in great shape. I’d like to get tto a few shows this summer just the way it is.It has odd ball tires ,so updated tires are a must.Really I didn’t know what was in store . A lot of sanding ,caulking and finish to go. It is a beautiful boat.
