Petot – People For The Ethical Treatment Of Trees! But All Is Not Lost.

,

T shirt from years ago. I was not enlightened then.

Ever think you would feel guilty about owning a Woody Boat? Ya, me neither, until now. Oh, you just wait. Do you even have the courage to read on? That’s okay, cause we have a short video trailer that will rock our little world.

Now, see! Feel guilty..ish kinda.. But in here lies a further question about tree families. Once you cut the tree…YOU BARBARIAN.. is it dead? No, not really. In fact, its been proven that wood does hold energy. It burns, weeps, bends, and gains moisture. So its still alive. Now, not in a family of sorts, but if the wood, trees can feel pain, fear and other emotions, one could lead to the conclusion that when formed into a boat, its no more than domesticated wood. The wood takes on a family of sorts. The other wood on the boat, and you. Hey, this is all backed up with Quantum Physics and other types of science I cant spell. But it is a rabbit hole if you want to get lost in the internet for a couple hours. I did, and lived to come back.

My boat is officially part of my family!

So here is the argument if anyone starts saying that you are butchering trees and mother nature. You are actually preserving the life of the trees, in fact, one could say, you have merely offered the trees, in fact an entire family on a boat trip of a life time. All you have to do is keep feeding it water and varnish! Okay, okay, when did I loose you? Was it the first paragraph?

PLANT MORE TREES ! Thats the way to balance out. Tree farming is getting bigger all the time. No there not old growth and the grain is not as tight. They are still pretty and functional. Plant trees in your yard or Summer place. Get involved with reforestation programs in Honduras. Tree harvesting is like hunting. If controlled it reaps better stronger results.

From what I have read on the subject of the wood species we use in our boats, mahogany does not grow in groves like some species. That makes the harvesting expensive to find just one tree in acres of land. White oak is a domestic tree and does grow in groves.

Tree farming specific species has its share of challenges in that if a disease or insect problem affects one tree, all in that farm can be ruined with it. There go the profits.

The same specie issues apply to tone woods used in guitar manufacturing as well. The owner/founder of one company travels the world looking for trees to harvest (and then deal with the export laws for that county) to select what he knows will make the quality instruments he requires. I own 2 of his product.

13,000 oak trees to build Norte Dame. One bon fire. WANTED: 13,000 more oak trees. Best stock up for the boats.

Good point! The growth quality of modern era white oak won’t be the same as the medieval trees they originally used.

Trees harvested for wooden boats did in fact die and went to heaven. Unrestored wooden boats = purgatory.

If trees havw memories like the video says, maybe they can tell us more about the history and making of our boats.

Boy, that film clip was one of the biggest pieces of crap I ever watched. Give me a break, and the people doing these studies, get our tax dollars in the form of grants and make a living out of coming up with this useless B.S.
Sorry, at 73 years old, I never thought I would ever hear such nonsense.

Since pontoons are referred to as “logs” then aren’t pontoon boats technically wood boats??

If trees communicate how did the elms all die out and why didn’t the pines let each other know that pine beetles are attacking? That video sounded like something that would come out of today’s current social media and was the biggest crock of horsebleep since watching the conspiracy video that a previous unnamed administration (from Texas) really took down the Twin Towers.

When hurricane Ivan went through New Orleans many old growth live oaks were uprooted. Being too valuable for old vessel restoration they were not tossed into mulch. My old Yacht Club, Pensacola Yacht Club allowed stumps to be stored on its unused acreage for gradual shipment to Mystic Seaport. We later traveled the Natche”s Trace and saw many, many white oaks on the ground after Ivan. They couldn’t be touched since they were on “government” land….sad, sad, sad.
