The Rest Of The Troy Story!

,

22Thanks to long time Fellow Woody Boater Troy for sending an fun update from last Fridays story!

If you follow WoodyBoater regularly you know that Sandi and I launched American Beauty last Thursday. (If you did not read it you can check in here  As every woodyboater knows you cannot rely on the weather and must make the best of whatever you are handed. It seemed a little cruel that for the 3 or 4 days leading up to launch day were in the mid 80’s, sunny and clear. Now remember we were working in a metal shed during this time getting AB ready.

photo1

On launch day the temps dropped to about 65F and damp. With the help of my Brother Rory we had a very successful launch and had a very pleasant trip from Damariscotta home to Cross Point in Edgecomb.

Rory and Sandi at the helm. The weather forecast was for mid 60’s and some degree of rain from

Friday till Sunday, with the sun returning and driving temps back into the 80’s starting on Monday. The day I had to go back to work. Now again you know I am going to make the best of what I am given, but come on, that is just not fair!

Most of Friday was spent tied up to the dock loading AB with all her amenities like chairs, wine, tp, and a futon. What is that your say? A futon? Ya, doesn’t everybody have a futon on their classic Chris Craft? What is with you people?

Now the shagin’ shack is ready

Check out the awesome monkey fist key chains that Chad made for us. Saturday Sandi and I decided to make an afternoon of it regardless of the chilly weather, so we headed off around noon. First stop was Hodgdon Yacht Services for fuel.

photo3

After pumping 66 gallons into AB I realized I had forgotten my money, credit cards, and everything. Fortunately they know us there and told us to call in with our card when we got home. (forgot to take a picture here) This dampened our spirits since we were planning on going out to lunch. As we headed up river I decided to call our favorite waitress, Sam Coffin, who works at The Osprey restaurant. After explaining our situation Sam asked “Is this going to become a regular thing?” See we had had dinner there the week before and had forgotten our money then too” Come on over you can call me when you get home” It is good to have friends in the area.

Sunday Mom was going to join us for a ride, but it rained and was still chilly, so we did home stuff.

Sandi and I were fighting off a depression in the chilly Maine weather as we prepared for the coming week of work in the upcoming hot weather. Knowing we had to pick up my tool truck from my mechanic I made the call. What? My truck won’t be ready due to parts that won’t be in until Tuesday. Woohoo! That means two days of guilt free mid-week woodyboating in 80+ degree weather. Oh the WoodyBoater God of the universe has smiled down upon us. Now Monday we were supposed to close on a house with Daughter Sam. As often happens with closings, everything was not quite ready. So now Sam, her friend Chelsea (one of Sam’s bridesmaids to be) and her son Finn came over for a ride.

The Beauties on American Beauty

photo7

It seems that Finn got to be the first to test out the futon.

photo8

The girls had some fun with the unfinished cleaning. Some of the new additions to American Beauty are a boarding ladder that we purchased in Dora from Dave at Freedom Boat Services. (We have one of the official boarding ladder, but have not mounted it as o yet, so this works well.)

photo9

Sandi love the new boarding ladder.

We also had a custom box/stair case made so Sandi, or any passenger, could more easily mount the co-captains seat.

This was the brain child of Floyd R Turbo, as fashioned by Jeff Koopus

Come Tuesday our lifelong friend Louise came to join us from Glastonbury CT. for a three hour tour, as we circumnavigated Westport Island. Louise took the helm for a bit, but I took the picture with her camera so I don’t have it to share with you.

After our adventure around Westport passing through Lower Hells Gate we picked up Jon and Darby at their dock on The Cross River.

Captain Jon and Sandi take us to Ovens Mouth.

After making a pass into Ovens Mouth and back out we traveled the narrow Back River to The Trevett Country Store for dinner.

Leaving Ovens Mouth.

The ladies got to kabitz while Jon and I navigated the Back River.

Photo13

Sandi, Darby, and Louise enjoy the aft deck and the sun. Since The Trevett Country Store does not have a liquor license and we wanted to drink our wine with dinner we placed our order "to go". We sat tied up to the dock in Trevett and ate our dinner on American Beauty. It seems many of our guests had never had fried pickles before.

WOW, that is a lot of empty wine glasses.

After motoring back to Cross Point and dropping off Jon and Darby, Sandi, Louise, and I had a BEAUTIFUL sun set cruise around to point to our dock.photo15

Thank you Troy for a great story. AB looks magnificent.

And I guess you don’t need a wallet as long as you have a futon.

    Troy,
Glad you got to use the boat. “Truck broke down” wink, wink.
Bet the others at work have never heard that from you before on a sunny day! I would do the same thing. Enjoy!

Matt, the link to the first store is broken.

Rory looks like a perfectly respectable normal adult. I wonder why his brother didn’t turn out so well? 🙂

Awesome follow-up to to a somewhat uneventful launch! Thanks for letting me run her. AB is an absolute beauty when she is sitting in the water.

Looking good Troy. Glad to see you are enjoying the fruits of your labor in beautiful surroundings. I miss the New England down home charm but in California you can always get immediate credit and easy long term financing if you forget your wallet.

Lee and Nancy you really should make the trip up here and get in a ride. We also have Yorktown in and going. That should be a good walk down memory lane.

Troy and Sandi invited me for a great cruise on AB during an off day on my 400 mile bike trip around Maine couple of years ago (including 2 nights stay in a comfy bed – as I was camping out during the trip). Piloting a big cruiser like AB around the coast of Maine is certainly a challenge considering tides, shoals and reefs, and a shoreline that is difficult because its all rock ledges and beautiful green trees. That’s not to mention dodging lobster trap buoys and making sure you’re in the channel. Its especially tricky docking on an outgoing or incoming tide. Here is a link on Youtube with AB going thru the swing bridge you might enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az1tvCvMIuw

Looks like I should have incorporated wine storage capability in the design of Sandi’s foot stool. lol

Just got back off my cruiser…! Read this great story.

I can attest that Troy does NOT ALWAYS forget his wallet…..we rotate paying for our meals together…it is MY TURN NEXT!

American Beauty is a real classy classic ……

I am “going boating” again this coming week!!!
