As the woody boating season officially opens here in Sunnyland,we thought we would share this wonderful email we just received here at Woody Boater HQ.  We receive countless emails from our citizens. many with, boats to sell, buy, feature, what iz it? The list goes on..We love it, but every now and then we get one that stops us in our tracks…. 7 years a go we started this to get the word out about how cool these boats were. Along the way we discovered what the author Shawn B did. That the community is amazing! I know, I know, everyone says that about the community they live and play in. But I have to say, there is something different here with this crazy group. It’s open, fun and all they really want to do is get along and have fun out on the water. Sure there is competition, and rumor crap. But hands down its a great family. Well, fellow Woody Boater Shawn let us know about his classic boat ride engagement last week. If you missed it, click here… The response was as moving as the story its self. The Karma of George Johnson is still strong in the universe. Below is the amazing email that we got, and I felt it was worth sharing. With Shawn’s permission of course..

Matt…I was working on my vacation planning for our special ride and checking out your Woody Boater website when I got distracted by all of the Valentine dedications to your Woody Boater brides!  I am now convinced you’re a great group of people and I should switch from my Antique car and truck interests to Wooden boats!  Thank you to all the Woody Boaters for their heart felt responses to my post!
 
Now I’m not sure if it was a coincidence or not but earlier in the day I was reading where a Hot Rodder (in Garage Style Magazine) was fed up with all the negative around the hobby and he parked his Hot Rod in the garage and took up gardening with his wife!  I’m not saying I’m going to take that drastic of an approach…but I’m willing to switch up hobbies!
 
Hessel boat show is REAL close to our new cottage we are building on Squaw Lake, are you planning on making the trip?

    Alex is a great ambassader, never too soon for that. Don’t knock gardening, it’s a good thing, and is compatible with boating!

    Introducing him to Alex Watson might go alright, but if his wife sees how many boats Alex has she is going to put the brakes on the hobby switch real fast!!!

    I think switching from cars to boats is an evolution rather than a change. I started out racing cars then, restoring them. Finally I figured out that boats are just as much fun to tinker with but, they are much more sociable. People can share your enthusiasm and you can do it all without breaking local traffic laws 🙂

      Sean if you like the social aspect of boating I would seriously consider some form of “Utility”, they are great for loading in lots of people for a good trip.

      PS: Gardening can be fun too!

        I have a Greavette “Runabout” that seats six and rides beautifully. I take the family out at every opportunity and as many friends as we can get to come out for a day….something I couldn’t do with the race cars or the Porsches. Out local club (Trent- Severn TSACBA) is also a very social group!

    I restored Porsches and muscle cars as well. My last one was a stunning all original 60K mile 911… I bought a classic boat on a saturday and sold three Porsches in a week.. never looked back… Even had my racing lisense.. But in a classic boat, you can floor that hemi all day long, and people wave at you for doing it. try that in a car!

    Looking for implements for our vintage Massey Ferguson tractor led me to a farm auction where I was drawn to an old lapstrake wooden boat for which there was no information. $380 later I was the proud owner of a 1959 Chetek Duchess. Didn’t take long to decide that the tractor had to go. Switching hobbies was the best thing my wife and I ever did. Finding Woodyboater is a close second.

    Well, I guess I’m still undecided – but only somewhat – I’ve completed 5 boats since 1986, but the ’64 Morgan +4 is still unrestored, and I bought it in ’78. New chassis in the shop though, so getting closer! 🙂

    Good to see all the great comments, Not surprising, do to all this great friendships made thru the boats. I/we have 8 boats and many folks going an a trip to Michigan ending at the Hessel show this year . we have met a wonderful group of people and well continue to travel around to all areas with our boats. But I am keeping the Porsche. it well last a life time as i put a hole 2000k on it last year. no time to drive it as it does not tow a boat.
