Bone Breaking News – Bill Basler Update!
We interrupt the dumbness of April Fools Day to give you a live-ish update on Fellow Woody Boater Bill Basler. We have officially spoken to him on the phone. Bill called me to personally thank the entire Wood Boat Community for all there good feeling and comments. He is reading them, and if very aware of whats going on. It does hurt to laugh, so of course I did everything i could to do so! He will be in the hospital for a while and is required to stay flat on his back while things heal. From what I could gather, I did not take notes, but just about every bone in his body was broken, legs, arms, 7 ribs, two places in his neck, basecly that entire song about the neck bone is connected to the whatever bone..they are all broken. His jaw is wired shut as well. Blended fish tastes about as good as it sounds. He also had punctured lungs and it was very bad at the start. He was out of it for two weeks. His wife Michelle slept in the room for the entire time. Bills family is everything to him, and one of the true healing factors in his life now. He is beyond grateful to them all. His left arm is damaged badly and he will need some more work on that to get back to his normal self. Bill is left handed and a true artist.
How it happened. According to Bill, he was driving to a meeting with two others on the morning in his Suburban, no real dramatic weather on I 80 which is a huge interstate. All he recalls is an explosion of snow on his left and it was a car pickup truck with a trailer that for what ever reason crossed over the medium, broke through wires and hit Bill head on on his side in front of him. Everyone in the other truck and passengers are OK. It took 2 hours to cut Bill out of the Suburban, he recalls being very cold, and then placed into a chopper, and that is all he recalls for two weeks. A funny/strange side note. The other truck was full of 4 women, who had never trailered a trailer, loaded with Anime stuff headed to a Anime convention. What the?
The Good News. He has his famous sense of humor and knows whats going on. He was asking about Florida and all that’s going on in the hobby. And completely understood that an order of Mahogany got front billing to his update. We had a good laugh over that. OK I did, he was in pain.. He is reading, cant really comment or participate but is reading. And extremely board, which is a great sign. So comment, or you can email him and he will respond. His email is bbasler@baslerdesign.com
It’s moments like this that we are reminded about how a normal day can in an instant turn into a new set of life challenges. But that family and friends are true and always there. Bill we are here for you. Let’s keep Bill from being board!
Bill,
Keep up the good hard work of recovery! Your boats will be calling for you and you’ll be there in due time! Looks like your amazing family is carrying your torch!! See you soon…….
Great to hear you’re doing better, Bill! I hope the recovery is swift and you’re back on the water soon.
Bill, please know that Karen and I have been keeping you and your family in our prayers and thoughts since hearing of your tragic accident. It’s good to see you sitting up in a chair so soon, and with as much of a smile as you can produce under the circumstances. We know that it would be a huge smile otherwise. Hang in there Bill!
As crazy as this may sound – that photo of you Bill just made my day! It’s fantastic to hear that you are on the (slow) road to recovery. We are cheering you on behind the scenes Bill. – Texx
Many Dittos

Bill,
Wishing you the best for a full recovery, and we are pulling for you. You kind of remind me of what the outcome of this encounter would end up looking like.
Thanks for the good news , especially this Easter . I wonder if the suburban was a life saver as Laurie and I drive Suburban’s?
Happy Easter to All, steve and laurie

Matt, thanks for the update on Bill and his supportive family. The amount of prayers, positive thoughts and even “fingers crossed”, are definitely reaching Bill, no doubt. Our hobby is comprised of an incredible amount of caring individuals always looking out for one another. Rest assured, Bill, that our prayers will continue for you and yours.
Bill,
Our thoughts are with you – wishing you a speedy recover and our very best.
Bill, Michelle its good to hear from you guy’s and know that Dana and I also have ya’ll in our prayers and thoughts. It’s good to see you up and about, And wow no cast! man the marvels of modern medicine, I would have thought you would have a cast somewhere. And if you did I sure there would be someone signing it with a varnish brush! Please keep us posted on ya’ll progress. And hope to meet you guys soon!!
Keep up the good fight Bill.
I look forward to meeting you one day in the recovered future.
Great to see you’re (or in WoodyBoater speak “Your”) progressing but what’s with the modern wheelchair? You need something that smells of varnish to help keep your spirits up. Stain it, stripe it and put on some gold leaf,
Even cooler would be to make it out of old water-skis.
Best wishes for continued fast recovery. Lookin’ good. Hope you’ll be back boating soon. The lengths some people will go to in order to lose a few pounds. Glad you’ve still got a sense of humor to pull you through. I don’t think that blended fish thing is going to catch on anytime soon. *shudder*
Bill, Marla and I are sending our best for your recovery, we know you are a survivor and a very talented person with a great family, we are praying for you. Be strong even when it gets tough, Roger
So glad to see your progress Bill. It was a story I saw about the Blue Bomb that got me started restoring glass Chris Crafts. I now have some fine boats that will continue to be handed down for many generations. A man just never knows what his legacy will be. Stay strong.
Bill,
Thinking of you, stay on the mend and you can be with us in Tavares next year!
