Classic 1985 Lake Tahoe Concours Images
Thanks to fellow Woody Boater and Chris Craft Antique Boat Club member Mike from California, we get to enjoy some rare 25 year old images taken during the 1985 Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance. Back in 1985 the Lake Tahoe Concours was held at the local marina in Tahoe City, California. In 1994 the event was relocated just up the road to the Sierra Boat Company marina, in Carnelian Bay where it is still held today.
The Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance is now considered to be one of the most prestigious wooden boat shows in the country, you can click here to learn more about the 2011 event, which is featuring Gar Wood – The Gentleman’s Runabout as the featured marque class. The organizers are expecting over 40 Gar Wood boats to be in attendance for this years show on August 12 & 13th.
The original photos were scanned from negatives, not from photos, with no touch-ups and posted on Mike’s Picasa Web Album so we can share them with the world. Remember, these were taken before the age of digital photography as we know it today… Back in the days when you took your film to your local drive-thru Fotomat in the shopping center parking lot for developing and prints.
The 44 photos are from the estate of Jon M Riley, Assistant Fire Chief, City of Vallejo. Mr. Riley’s son passed the photos & negatives on to Mike, knowing that Mike was a wooden boat enthusiast and that they would be in good hands. Mike noted that the back of the photos are dated August 1985. (You can click on any of the images here to enlarge them)
You can see the entire collection of photos by visiting the Boat Buzz Forum at the Chris Craft Antique Boat Club site by clicking here, then scroll down to the Picasa link that Mike posted.
And, if your not a member of the Chris-Craft Antique Boat Club or haven’t visited the Chris-Craft Antique Boat Club site or the Boat Buzz Forum before, check it out – There is a ton of information on the forum about Chris-Craft boats and antique & classic boats in general.
Thanks to Mike and Mr. Riley’s son for sharing these great old images of the Lake Tahoe Concours with us.

Ahh! The little yellow roof film shacks. The good old days where you took the pictures and had no idea if you got any good ones. You would then drive to the shack and decide is you could wait a week or did you need to splurge for super fast next day service? Could you imagine a week delay waiting for the next woody boater? Well, I gues we waited 26 years for this update!
What a graet blast from the past. What a fine thing to do passing them on the the boat community .
Great looking at the people in the photos, I think I saw Magnum P.I.
Crap! My “I cant spell or type ” key didnt work.
Randy yea blame it on the keyboard… Love old photos… My favorites are when the boats were being used every day….
I’m discouraged that 1985 is considered fine OLD photographs.
