Columbia Willamette Chapter ACBS Workshop – A Big Success In Portland, Oregon
In conjunction with the Columbia Willamette Chapter and ACBS HQ – This year’s Chapter Workshop in Portland, Oregon was once again a big success. Here’s the report from ACBS Past President and event coordinator, Dick Werner.

A Northwest workshop was held this last Saturday at Lake Oswego Boat Company in West Linn, Oregon just outside of Portland. Mike Mayer was the host and the Workshop was sponsored by the ACBS and the Columbia Willamette Chapter. There were over 60 attendees. In the morning there were talks given by experts in their field covering boat upholstery cleaning and maintenance, boat trailer safety, engine maintenance, and the criteria used to select the correct prop for your boat.
The guest speakers for the morning talks and afternoon hands-on breakout sessions were,

After a great lunch they divided into five smaller groups and rotated around five different hands-on work stations giving everyone the opportunity to apply varnish, stain, repair splits in planks, rout out old deck seams and re caulk and replace trailer bearings. Each station was supervised by one of the areas professional boat restorers. It was a very informative and fun day.
The weekend before, the Water Wonderland Chapter hosted a workshop at the Maritime Classics’s Restoration Shop in Traverse City, Mi. On Friday, April 20th the Blue Ridge Chapter is organizing a workshop in conjunction with their boat show at Lake Hartwell, Ga. which will held at The Rocky Nob Boat Shop. The Adirondack Chapter will have a workshop April 21st at the Gar Wood Custom Boat shop and the Northern California Chapter will be having a workshop the last weekend this month. Next month the Okanagan Chapter in British Columbia, Canada is also planning to have a workshop on May 19th which will be held at Boathouse Bay Classics & Sea Sonic Restoration Shops.

There will be a full three-day weekend Symposium / Workshop May 6,7 & 8 at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, N.Y. with an outstanding program not to be missed!
These workshops are turning out to be alot of fun as well as a great learning experience.

A big thank you to the Portland folks for the work shop. As always we had a good time and even learned some useful tips for our hobby. We were lucky to see the west coast premier of the Sons of Varnish shirt,courtesy of Mike Mayer. Excellent way to spend a sunny spring day.

I just couldn’t pass up the photo op with Mike varnishing while displaying the colors. Great time with the CWC group with lots of information being passed around.
Thanks for the story, Texx. The workshop was awesome. The weather cooperated and, as you can see, all the guys were having fun. We also had an amazing demo on the “SawStop”, the safest table saw in the world. More to come on that later…..watch out for the Franchini’s in Hessel…they’ve got sticky fingers! Wood, bow lights, if they can get their hands on it it’s as good as gone…..

I have an Owens 1969 she was in Mo now in Destine Fl where the sun is ho and the salt water is hard on her. I need to get more varnish on her before summer. Is there one better than another for this type of weather.
