Happy Me Day, And You, And Him.

Fathers Day
Today is Fathers Day, in case you forgot. Which as a dad is very possible. We kinda forget, as do the Mothers out there. I do though remember my dad, and especially my dad in law. The two could not have come from two completely different universes. One taught me how to think, and the other how to feel. I suppose if I am completely honest with myself, the love of a father wasn’t ever something I felt for me until I met the Boatress, and more importantly her Mom and Dad. Ed and Betty. They showed me what unconditional love is, and never any pressure or lectures on how to live or think. I didn’t even recognize that until recently I suppose. Maybe right now as I am writing this. Dang!

Ed and myself, way back in the day.
We all need people to emulate, to learn from, and for men, mentors, or role models do not have to be just one person. We can learn from many that we respect. I still do every day. And as we grow older, and older, those men become harder to find, and there comes a point, where you realize, hey, wait, maybe I am that person to someone. And you quickly catch yourself and think. Oh you better warn that person to move on and find another to learn from, cause I am an idiot, and all you will learn from me is bad habits, and really bad spelling.

My family, I am proud of all of them, I am just here for the meals
None of us are perfect, we all have flaws, lots of flaws, okay, Flaws Galore. But as a group, Fathers. We are not so bad. And if our sons can learn a little good from all of us, well, thats what Fathers Day is for me. A day to think about the fathers we all have met that bring out the best in us. Okay and the worst, but I suppose thats why Mothers Day is for. Thank god for Mothers out there. Just not today. HAPPY FATHERS DAY.

Can’t tell you how often I wish I could have my Dad back here on earth, have lunch and discuss how life has been since he’s gone. I was lucky to have a great father in law too.
So, for now, I’ll just have to be happy having a conversation with my fourteen month old grandson and show him off to my Dad.
Happy Father’s Day to all the WoodyBoater Dads and Grandpas. I’m going to take a boat ride!
While he did have a mischievous side my father was more of a “no nonsense” person I think typical of men or the era [especially WW2 vets]. He did teach us hard work, responsibility and the sense of pride you get when you do it yourself. I’m sure the main reason I have a classic wood boat now is because as a kid we traveled all throughout the Great Lakes on a 1951 31′ Chris-Craft Express with just a chart and a compass [he did later on add a Heathkit Radio Direction Finder that he built in our living room – of course].
Happy Father’s Day to all of us!
It’s the best job in the world. As empty nesters, the roles have changed to: support, guide, and help them succeed in their lives. Soon to be a Grandpa for the first time so super excited.
My Dad, my Father In Law and my Grandpas loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor. However, there were strict boundaries, a defined moral code and an honor of family name also instilled in us. The best memories were just time spent with them doing ordinary things that THEY liked to do. That’s when I really got to know THEM.
My Father died when I was 24. 55 years ago. What in the world would he think of the now world? He was an only child, an athlete, and ran a sporting goods/hunting and fishing store. Folks thought he had the best job in the world? NOT. I studied the situation, yes I got free converse allstars and shotgun shells (why I am nearly deaf) but with all that cool stuff, and many BOATS around…you can’t sell it and USE it. He could tell I was not “blessed with the merchants mentality”…he taught me how to DO the cool stuff he no longer could find the time for. Thanks “Captn”. John in Va
Happy Father’s Day to all. I think one if the fun things about being a dad is sharing what excites you with your kids… and them doing the same with you. While our daughter doesn’t necessarily spend hours with me getting the boat ready for vacation… she does make sure she packs her Whirlwind shirt so we can capture some memories and I think that’s pretty darn cool and makes me proud to be a dad. Cheers!
The backs.. with my bald head! Ha! Shirts thanks to the estate sale of Howard Percival Johnson.
Funny how my late father gets smarter as I get older
Thanks woodyboater
Happy Father’s Day to all the WoodyBoater dads!
I thought that beer can Dad would make the header today. Great weather here in east Tenn. Same to all other daily readers. Son cooked Great BBQ at his marina slip…Paster read a unique poem that started ” DAD taught me more with his Hands that his Words…..” everybody stay safe.. TV just had update 23 yr drowned overnight at county quarry..
I learned a lot from my dad (as he sits on my uncle’s boat) and step father, some of the things I should and should not do as a father. As we watch my son’s 1 year old twin granddaughters so I can help finish off adding a 12′ long closet and moving a doorway at their house I’m thinking mother’s of twins should have Mother’s Day every month.
By the way, 17′ strip planked Larson, picture 1951, boat late 40’s?
your world revolves around mahogany. best wishes to all.
You DO have a tender sweet side! Nice job Matt! Happy Father’s Day to all dads!
It is fun being a Dad to this crew! Although some of them are significantly others. They feel just like my kids. Happy Father’s Day to all Woody Boaters
What a beautiful day it’s been.
Perfect weather up north, calm winds and fair skies.
Just seeing this picture by accident today, made me realize how my love of everything mechanical started on my Dad’s lap so long ago.
Thanks Dad, I’ll be sure to pass it on.
Sorry I missed commenting yesterday, I was was very busy with family. My dad is still with us and it was a great day, with my 3 kids families each with a grandchild for me! Dad’s 88 now and we still manage to golf together each week! So fortunate.
