Here Is Your Chance To Make A Living Doing What You Love Best!

The ACBS is reaching out to the Antique & Classic Boat Community to find the perfect Executive Director! Thats right, you are reading this right. The ACBS, and I am not talking about the Advisory Committee on Borderline Substances We are talking the Antique & Classic Boat Society. The one that we all love and hate depending on who you are. Kudos big time to the ACBS for doing this, it’s been a long time in the works and much needed. With the board of directors changing it’s hard to effect change in a year. And as volunteers, burn out is the price paid in full. So a full time person that can be a bridge and person we all love, is a massive positive thing. Now, according to the job, you have to live in Clayton.. NY.. As in home of the museum and the Thousand Islands. HOW SICK IS THAT? You get to live on an Island in a cool hose that will cost you 5 bucks and go to work in a cool Woody Boat and just bask in the joy of it all. Clayton is a cool community…in the summer. And even though cold in the winter, a very warm place from my winter visits. The place is dripping in the Woody Boater culture. Dang! I have dreamed of such a gig. You can read all about (aboot for our Canadian friends).. it here at the link. And if you don’t like link clicking, Here it is below. Have at it. Tell them Woody Boater sent you… wait.. maybe you should keep that to yourself. And for gods sake DO NOT WEAR YOUR SONS OF VARNISH SHIRT TO THE INTERVIEW!

HERE IS THE  OFFICIAL JOB POSTING HOT OFF THE PRESS THING WEBSITE!

Executive Director. The Antique and Classic Boat Society, Inc. (ACBS) founded in January, 1975 has recently added the position of Executive Director to its administrative staff. This person will assume leadership of the Administrative Staff and will report directly to the Society President and The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors.

The vision of the ACBS is to provide an organization wherein people with a common interest in and love of historic, antique and classic boats can come together with friends and colleagues in a spirit of fellowship and fun to share dreams, adventures, knowledge, history and experiences.

ACBS is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of New York State and US federal tax regulations. It operates internationally with 7500 members and 58 Chapters spread through the United States, Canada and most recently, Europe. The annual operating budget exceeds $500,000 and is funded primarily by membership dues. Additionally, an Education Endowment Fund is maintained for the awarding of annual scholarships to students pursuing vintage boat preservation, restoration and building.

Administrative offices are currently located in Clayton, NY. Organizationally, the ACBS functions with an annually elected President, as well as some 30 Committees, including an Executive Committee of the Board. The Board includes seventeen elected members plus the Chapter Presidents – all unpaid volunteers. Most Directors are elected for three year terms. The Executive Committee re-forms yearly with the loss of only one member – the outgoing Past President. Thus, with each President having served as a Vice-President for two years, continuity is maintained.

The Board meets off-site four times a year for business meetings including an Annual Meeting in September and a winter budget meeting. The Annual Meeting traditionally includes the ACBS International Boat Show. Meetings other than the budget meeting are usually scheduled at varied locations across North America having strong connections to vintage boating.

I assume you’re thinking of me since you posted it here and you know that I read this 1st thing every morning. Unfortunately I don’t see any free chicken-on-a-stick and that’s a deal breaker. We really do need some SoV people in control though or maybe now is the time for the CCABC to do a takeover? The new CC Club board members are just coasting now right?

Maybe this is the opportunity Philip has been waiting for to move up from down under? Philip, put the boat back into that shipping container, we’ll meet you at the dock.

Hi Rick – as a Director of both these groups, I suppose I am in a position to comment – the CCABC is not coasting at all – we have a great many priority items which are being worked on daily. It is in fact a period of intensive activity at the CCABC, though much of it is behind the scenes and organizational or administrative. The previous instability of the club resulted from a number of issues, all of which must be mitigated and this takes a major effort. It is a fruitful endevour but very time consuming, especially to those of us that must combine these volunteer efforts with day jobs.

The ACBS has been extremely supportive of the CCABC throughout this process of regeneration and every indication is that the two groups, though vastly different in structure and manner of operation, will continue to work closely, symbiotically but independant of each other. I can speak to this from an informed perspective, and I think members of both boards like things just the way they are.

As a classic boating hobbyist with a personal opinion, I can say that I think things are changing. The new leadership at the CCABC and most notably with this very significant change in ACBS, that much is clear. The emergence of WB is another very visible indication of the evolution that we are observing, and I am very pleased to be a part of it.

What are you talking about? The commute is only about 15,000 km, and you won’t even run into heavy traffic most of the way.

Trying to figure out the header shot by Bob Kays this morning.

It’s not the bow that we are looking over. It’s the aft deck and Bob must have been using a pretty significant fisheye lens. ?????????

What ever….it is a beautiful shot.

Matt this job has YOU written all over it. Not necessarily does one have to live in Clayton, in fact it would be better to live on a cruiser so you can tour the USA and visit all the chapters, boat shows, workshops, auctions, and wiener roasts 365 days per year. Just wonder the fun of filing the expense reports and counting people choice ballots. And the meetings and meetings and wait, DONUTS! I look forward to voting for the SoV candidate soon.

Thanks for posting this today Matt! Anything is negotiable. Living in Clayton, private islands, cruisers, chicken on a stick.
Heck, we’re even thinking we’d allow them to wear thier Son’s of Varnish tshirt on “Casual Friday’s”. (as long as no one is coming into the office that day) See how much we’re willing to change?

Seriously, this is a big step in the right direction for ACBS and the hobby. If you know of anyone you think might be a good fit, make sure you tell them about this opportunity.

Thanks again Matt for spreading the word.

John – It’s not the job that bothers me, I just didn’t know that (independent) Woody Boater was getting into the job placement business on behalf of the ACBS.

That must be the nicest 100 feet of Lake Hopatcong shoreline.
If you need to live in Clayton or near by to get that job it will narrow the search considerably. Must have RiverRat proclivities.

      Jim Mersman says:

One does not have to live in Clayton. The job posting is unclear in that it states the position is in Clayton but it then goes on to say that it is not a given and negotiable. Just to be a bit more clear. I agree that it might limit responses if mandated to live in Clayton.

I would want to make sure that there wasn’t any red smarties in the bowl. Also, that I had the use of a PS3 and Battlefield 3 in the chamber. I’m a simple fellow.

      m-fine says:

You will be lucky to find any color Smarties on this side of the border, but I guess it would be a quick trip across the river to pick some up and import them yourself. However, I would suggest a boat with a little more freeboard and a deeper V bottom than Muzzy.

I guess I could volunteer, if I can live at Boldt Castle and use any of the boats in the boathouse. I’ve talked it over with the wife and boys and it will be hard on them nbut sometimes you have to suffer for the common good.

I think Joe Martel is just wainting in the wings until they beg him to take the job.
