How Ccccccoooolllld Is It? Can Wood Freeze?

It’s so cold you have to open the fridge to heat the house.Okay we got the joke out of the way. The question of the day is. What happens to wood when its this cold? And oh BTW, all our Florida Friends. Shut the hell up! Anyway. According to the internet, wood does freeze, or actually the moisture in the wood freezes. But does not expand, it actually gets smaller. So in an odd way thats some sort of good news. But extreme temps, can cause wood to crack over time. Expanding on contracting. So thats now out of the way.

From Paul Harrison driving through an hour of this yesterday after leaving Calgary for the cabin at Shuswap Lake.

YIKES

What we really want is HOW COLD ARE YOU? Report in. Like, is Jim Staib alive? Is Hessel no longer water front? How bout all our Michingan and Minn family? And yes even down south. I did get a report that in Bay St Louis its going to be 19 degrees. Yes thats a funny thing to the up north people. But down that deep south, it can be a mess.
So, okay one more joke. Show us your frozen Wood! Ugh. A Woody joke. Ugh. Its so cold I have no sense of humor.

WeatherBug says 11F with 28mph wind. We got maybe an inch of snow just south of Romeo, MI.

So much for the ‘once in a generation’ snow fall predictions.

Supposed to drop to 9F in Rochester, NY with a “flash freeze”. Got my generator on standby. Hope everyone winterized their engines correctly.

Maybe we’ll have good ice for ice fishing around here. Hasn’t been consistently cold enough in years.

Woke up to 55 degrees and the wind howling here on Long Island but supposed to be 19 by 6pm today. Got the fireplace ready to go and a fresh stock of TN moonshine on standby.

After coffee and looking closer at today’s story there is suspicion that it is photo shopped. If you look close Paul’s vehicle is on the road not on the side waiting for a tow.

It’s a winter wonderland in Crosslake, Minnesota. It was 15 below yesterday, and the good news was that the power was back on after 3 days in some cases. Heavy, wet snow brought the trees down and big winds today could bring more excitement. I think I’ll take a sauna and a roll in the snow to wake up.

Well , we have been down here in Tarpon Springs, FL since Monday trying to outrun the cold. BUT, it looks like our luck is about to run out tonight.

I’m just south of you Dennis. We are in Reddington Beach, Just north of St. Pete. It is 63 and drizzling. However it is better than my home in Ohio. It is -8 there. In Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula there are blizzard warnings so wouldn’t want to be there right now. Looks like an inside day today. Glad all boats are winterized.

Visiting son, DIL & grandson in White Lake, MI. 12:18pm positive 4F here, with about an inch of snow blowing around in strong winds. Actually colder further south – negative 3F at home in northern KY. Neighbor sent pics of a tree down in front of our house. And the pickup that plows our road, laying on its side against a power pole, that kept it from tumbling on down the hill.

It was -5 this morning in southern Kentucky going up to 7 today, This is highly unusual for us. With the wind blowing. Living in a 100 plus year old home we do not need this weather.

We are heading out to a marina/RV/cabins, Renegades, on lake George for the weekend with our sons and DILS. Its going to be chilly, anything below 75 is considered chilly down here. We have liquid refreshments, wood for the fire and maybe will even go for a boat ride tomorrow.
Merry Christmas to all of my Woodyboater friends who I also consider to be pals.

Big difference between Eastern MI and West MI. Storm moves out but lake effect takes over. They say a foot or more but hard to tell with the high winds. Forecast for Lakes MI and Superior are for waves 20-25′. Nobody will ever know. These were enough to sink the Fitz.
