How Cold Is It? It’s So Cold That…….
This weekend while I was searching for the new Woodyboatermobile, we got some reports in from around the globe. Looks like our pals in Michigan and the west coast are going boating regardless of the polor vortex. Here in DC it dropped temperature fast as it dropped about 8 inches of snow on us. So today, I thought it would be fun to share all the joy of winter in your home town.

This one from Dick Dow on the west coast. ust whetting the cruiser appetite for a minute or two – yesterday was first time out of the water in about four years – time for some basic maintenance, a larger swim step and mahogany transom…
Not as bad as your weather, but still pretty cold for boatwork!

An intrepid group of woody boosters from the So Cal ACBS club braved temperatures of sixty degrees above zero, and water actually falling from the sky, for a static display at the Dana Point Festival of Whales in Southern California this weekend. We displayed our boats on the grass along the harbor walkway, and enjoyed lots of attention from casual passers by and visitors to the Festival. Even though some festival events were canceled due to the rain, boats are meant to get wet, so our club members braved the elements and had a great time talking to the public about our classics. With Sunday promising less rain, we donned our windbreakers and prepared to enjoy another fun day of talking about classic boats!

And from Dennis Mykols up in Michigan, the Grand Rapids Boat Show held last week. “We had a mix of launches, steamers and a couple of FiberClassics. But with the bad weather that we had all winter, it’s amazing we got any boats out of the storage buildings this year, and to the show.”
Send us all your cold weather photos in the comment section, remember under 1 mg in size or it wont load!
It’s 5 degrees. We are strong people in the Midwest especially in Cleveland Ohio. We know how to deal with this kind of weather and temperatures we defy it and laugh in its face. My neighbors had a party last night to deal with the temperatures.
I like your neighborhood!
I figured that IS your neighborhood what with that lovely landscape.
So here is the confusing part for me. How does one broach subject of taking this photo. No Darla, here is what I need, can you and some friends get in your bikinis. Yes I know its 10 degrees outside, its OK really. Now, here is the thing, I need this photo to be taken out in the middle of the road, in the slush.. It will be Sexy.. really.. And then posted on a web site looked at by 50 year old men.. Hows that? Darla?
Looks more like a Tequila night to me.
Probably went more like “Cliff, Cliff come take our picture! We just got out of the Hot Tub did another shot, now we need to mess with the people driving by. Darn no one is driving in this crap. Take our picture anyway!”
I’m 60 and I’m lookin’…..is the boat in the parking lot behind those people on the road?
Oh , you were here last night? Why didn’t you call?
19 days till I land in Central Florida!
Getting ready. I’ll bring the Bourbon.
17 days until we land in FL. Troy I did the same last night in -18C but barefoot. Nothing like BBQing in the winter. Looking forward to meeting you on Tuesday on the cruise.
I will be staying in Palatka Monday night if anyone wants to meet up for dinner.
What’s your favorite Bourbon? Four Roses? Woodford Reserve? Old Forester? Blanton’s?
My go to is Makers Mark, but I always say I have not met a Bourbon that I didn’t like.
Woodford Reserve!
Last weekends boat show…
Oddball from Kelly’s Hero’s says to only think Spring.
It is starting to get hard for the pets to even go outside for a bathroom break.
M-26 in the UP just west of Alex.
That looks just like the LSSU campus.
Jim, our whole area looks like that. As my friend Jeff Martines says, can’t wait for it all to melt into the Great Lakes. My whole family’s been echoing that sentiment all winter.
We had -21 degrees on Friday -18 yesterday morning and a bit of a heat wave today in Traverse City it was 5 degrees this morning.
This is the kind of winter we get in Kentucky. Not often deep snow, but more like freezing rain. Bad for the trees, and makes the roads difficult to drive.
Here is another….the ice can be beautiful if it does not destroy everything.
Great shot!
Ditto that!
Ditto, ditto that!
What an amazing photo!
Thanks, but I bet Cliff’s bikini girls get more right-click-blowups!
Here is what we feel like in Minnesota….
Yes, weather has been a common theme of discussion in many places this winter….
After having my gatorade freeze in the container while running trails all winter in sub freezing weather, it was a relief to finally have a 70+ day on Lake Lanier for our 9 mile Sunday morning trail run.
I would have pulled my boat out and gone for a cruise for sure had it been ready. Next day, there’s an overnight freeze warning but not the ice box most of you are in. Thank goodness, a running friend from Boston recommended I put vodka in my gatorade to keep it from freezing on those days.
Woah. You’re a runner? And a trail one at that? And a dedicated one? How did I miss the memo.
You’ll be at Dora right? I’m running the Croom Fools 16 mile trail race early Saturday a.m. in the Withlacoochee State Forest. (It’s in Brooksville, one hour from Tavares.) You should do it! Then hit the Show with a great runner’s / beer buzz that afternoon.
Let me know.
Life on the Mississippi River in southeast Iowa is Still frozen over. Thing Spring!!

In Wisconsin it’s colder than a well digger’s auger. But at least it’s windy!
Boat slips in the 1000 Islands.
Lake of the Ozarks Missouri. The water hole at the end of the cove.
Up here in Green Lake, WI the very hardiest wooden-boat enthusiasts harness the power of the wind and make the most of the ‘hard-water’ season!
The Green Lake Ice Yacht Club races whenever they can on Wisconsin’s deepest inland lake (239′) all winter…now Optimist-rigged kiddie-iceboat building seminars are put on regularly to bring up the next generation, too. Many DN-class ice boats join with some giant stern-steer classics in the area, too. Looks like fun…if I could only find those electric knickers!
Take a minute to gaze at the astonishing classic gaff-rigged “Jack Frost”, here being prepared to host a cameraman from Fox 11 News for a speedy, slippery thrill ride!
You know… “Air, Ice, Wood- Life is really quite simple.”
(BTW I loved the surprise WoodyBoater centerfold ad in my latest issue of the Brass Bell…thanks for supporting the CCABC, Matt!) 🙂
Winter? Is it cold?
The ferries in Quebec are still crossing. If it weren’t for the changing current direction and the ferry traffic, it would be frozen over. Kinda cool to watch the spinning ice flows.
It’s time to come home Chad. You are starting to get a French accent.
Yes, it’s been a little tough in northern Michigan this year. The other day we woke to -19F in Traverse City (home of Hagerty Marine) and my wife said, “Do you know if the temperature miraculously jumped 50 degrees it would still be below freezing?” Now that’s COLD!
Down under here in Queensland Australia, where it NEVER snows I’m thinking that too much exposure to that white cold stuff tends to twist the brain cells somewhat???? Chicky babes in bikinis, sitting around in yer Hawaiian shirt N’ Shorts. I gotta say, ya’ll are lookin forward to summer, here we just have to look forward to tomorrow….. same thing ! Beautiful one day, perrrrfect the next. So come down some time (& bring them there Babes too) & enjoy ! From the Tweed through to Townsville, we’ll slot you into a Hacker or a Chris Craft & take you for a ride.
When I took today’s header photo (yesterday am, in a Petoskey, Michigan valley, btw), it was -30 below on my car display.
So cold, it actually was beautiful. Maybe our trouble is it just hasn’t been cold enough long enough. Er, scratch that.
I can’t believe no one has noted that in Cliff’s photo, first in these comments, that it is Betty White in that “Hot in Cleveland” picture.
Bob,
Want to borrow my glasses? Or maybe you’ve outside in the cold for too long and your chattering teeth prevent you from seeing clearly! No Betty among those Babes!
Love the blue Toyota Land Bruiser in Dennis’ photo!
Italians are not immune to this phenomenon….
