Meet “Dim” Woohooo, We Have An Internet Troll!

,

Meet ‘Dim” and his boat Troll

Having a Troll is a sure sign we have made the big time. But….If you have been reading Woody Boater for the past couple weeks, OK, months, you will see some negative comments in various stories. They come from a “Tim”, “Dave” and other names. But, and here is the fun part. It’s all the same person! That’s right. We have our ways. And as I have always promised, we won’t let that info out, but we do know who it is, and he also goes by another name when making positive comments. We have done stories about him, his boat, and thought he was a friend.  Literally a two faced reader. OK, maybe a 5 face reader.

Jim, Dim and Mfine. Little did they know, Dim is one of us.

Right now he is reading this and thinking. WTF? Yup! Known it since your first comment. I don’t respond in a small way Dim. Your comments actually make it more fun for me personally, since it inspires more stories about the folks he dislikes.

I am sure there always has been a “Dim” along the way. “Hey those shorts make your rear ends look big.  HAHAHHA. Who is that guy Darla?

So, why? Why is “Dim” as Troy has named him. Buy fusing Tim and David and a Woody boater star is born.  Why is Dim so negative? Well, see “Dim” is buddies with a small group of boat restorers. They are a spin off of a bigger restorer/broker and actually great guys. I am not sure if they even know who “Dim” is, but I am sure they know him.

Dim’s home? Dora Canal?

And so, when I met those guys in Florida and talked to them about helping them, I was looking forward to that, whatever we can do to support folks out there. They are not sponsors, but we do support good folks regardless if it helps get a business going. For example, Kocian Instruments is not a sponsor, yet they are going all in on trying to make Gauges available in a good business way, on time and on budget. So, we use them, and want to help.

For some reason Dim is annoyed when ever I reference a Sponsor. LIKE KATZS MARINA!

And this is how damaging “Dim” is to his pals. Ya see, I don’t want anything to do with turds like Dim. So we backed off, and no names will be promoted or shared.  If they do know, then that’s the way they do business. And if they don’t which I suspect is the case, then I am sorry you have a pal like that, he has made it impossible to help you.

Never before photo of “Dim” ruining a Chris Craft photo shoot. And trying to Grope a model.. This is where we get the term, A “Dim” view of things.

Wait one minute. Do you mean that you know it is me when I post as Troy in ANE, Troy in TX, Troy in FL ……………..
    What about Miami Vice Troy?
Darn and I thought I was being so sneaky.

Based on his lengthy prose I am going to guess it is Paul Harrison. Wait, no, too obvious. It is probably a much bigger twist…perhaps Seth Katz himself! No one would suspect it!

Wait…maybe it is ME? Oh no! I don’t know who to trust anymore.

Maybe I should just go boating?

  3. m-fine
    m-fine says:

Oh wait, based on the three of us in a photo together, I guess it is safe to say it is not me or Jim. Phew! I feel better now.

But…who else was on the boat at the time? Is it Jimmy? Or GASP! the Boatress? Say it isn’t so!

My guess is Wilson. Very least suspected. Obviously he has a dark side, not all varnish and chrome.

Its really sad to understand why Tim Dim and Dave is out to troll this website, If you don’t like the content just don’t come here and make negative comments, It really shows your ignorance and lack of any class as a bottom feeder in our hobby. I personally think you are just jealous of all this now especially since finding out you have wood boats yourself, Really disappointing for the rest of us that you even waste your time here.

    Sean says:

Well, I’m disappointed too. But, not with “DIM”… dealing with internet trolls is a fact of life. Calling out a troll in our midst and offering a breadcrumb trail of clues to an identity is not cool. In fact, it’s kind of like bullying at school… especially with the tight knit clique that regularly post here.

This is not my first negative comment on Woodyboater. But, I own them and have taken the heat for them. “DIM” represents some people that hold an alternative position to the sunshine we see here and should be heard. “DIMs” comments may be outlandish but, there is a grain of thought that may be more common in our community than we would like to think. Since only a small percent of readers actually post, we have no idea if “Dim” is in the majority, or a minority of one.

Unfortunately, our community is much smaller than we sometimes think, and it is easy to become an outsider very quickly. “Dim” has recognized this and chosen to “enlighten” us under an alias (or two). Cowardly, yes. But, understandable. Woodyboater may not divulge the actual identity, but I submit it’s just a matter of time until we all know just who “DIM” is… I’m not saying he didn’t make his own bed, but, “WE” should be above calling him out for alternate opinions. The delivery of those opinions is just a measure we can use to judge their value.

Jeez, now I sound like a Liberal… Damn. Let’s just go boating.

    • Matt
      Matt says:

I could not agree more, and thanks. TO BE CLEAR, there are several folks out there that I am happy with negative comments. There is one in the Northwest that thinks we are all delusinal and snobs for saying our boats are affordable. He calls it out using his name and I APLAUD that. We should not be in our own bubble. And that thought provioked a great debate. HELL, its why we created this site.
Dim issue is that he says one thing negative and snippy and then right away says something nice as another person. OWN it Dim. And by creating the name Dim, he now can. You should have the freedom to post. And more importantly, I dont spam them, or change them, which I could do. So I hope that shows that we are open. He is still a tool. BTW

      • Sean
        Sean says:

Matt, I’ve been a Woodyboater here for quite some time… you KNOW I appreciate all you do for us, and our hobby. However, I’m still gunna call ’em like I see ’em.

BTW, the affordability of our hobby depends on how you define woody boating. Personally, I still think it is not affordable for most… probably because a 14′ plywood kit or a cedar strip “handyboy” with a 1957 Johnston screwed on the back don’t fall into my definition. (They’re just cool accessories. Lol !!!) You have to live and let live.

    • m-fine
      m-fine says:

I don’t know that Dim’s post represent an alternate position, they come across as personal attacks on Matt, Seth, and now the crew at Kocian.

I have no idea what business arrangements Matt has with Seth. The site has prominent ads for Katz’s Marina and I would assume Matt gets some form of compensation for that. Katz’s provides material for stories and Matt provides exposure, both have value to either side. Who cares how much Matt is paying for his varnish jobs? Does it matter if Seth pays him for the ad with cash and Matt pays for varnish work with cash vs them working out an alternative arrangement? It is no secret that Matt is in the advertising business or that this blog is supported by ad revenue. There is no secret conspiracy being exposed by Dim.

Bloggers get paid by sponsors, sometimes with free stuff, sometimes with cash, often with both. Not just here, not just the boat world, EVERYWHERE. If Dim is just figuring that out and is upset by it, that is a reflection of his own naivate.

*m-fine was not paid any form of compensation to make this post and does not anticipate receiving any compensation in the future. Opinions expressed in this post are his own and were not solicited or influenced by any other party. No animals were harmed in the writing of this post with the exception of the pig who provided the bacon that may or may not have been consumed while it was written.

      • Sean
        Sean says:

m-fine, agree with everything you said. But, we must rise above this… and it sort of sets a precedent. Seriously, I don’t know how anyone could be blind to what makes a GREAT business relationship (Like Woodyboater & Katz’s) and it is none of our business… we just get to enjoy the results.

Considering an alternate position and personal attacks, I think you need to look past the words and concentrate on the whys of the sentiment. If the motivation is spiteful, then the troll is just a troll and should be ignored. If the motivation is to alert others of an issue, then that should be heard… no matter how ineloquently it is stated.

        • m-fine
          m-fine says:

I don’t know anything about who the guy is or his motivations, nor Matt’s motivations for the partial exposure today.

For those who are new to the Internet, I offer the following posted under my own name (and yes my real name is M. Fine under the more traditional punctuation, and I don’t go by my first name “Matt’ for obvious reasons):

          ******SPOILER ALERT********

Woodyboater is not a magical fairy-tale land. Woodyboater is a business! (GASP!) It costs real money to run this site which is offset by real revenue. Some of that revenue comes from sponsors who spend money to place ads here.

Sponsors who are spending real money likely have an expectation that they are going to get real exposure for that money. That may include stories about their business and there may be an expectation that Woodyboater will not promote competitors who are not sponsors. I honestly have absolutely no inside knowledge of any content arrangements or if there even are any, but I can say for sure that if I were spending $5,000 a year to advertise “m-fine’s Artisanal Bacon” here, I would not be happy if Matt frequently ran stories about non-sponsors “Troy’s ANE Bacon” and “Alex’s UP Veggie Bacon.” As many pro-athletes will say…”it’s a business.”

Some other shocking revelations. The photos here are not all “real.” Many have been photo-shopped. Sometimes to clean them up for presentation or artistic concerns, other times to change the content.

Sometimes some of the stories here are a bit like fishing tales. Altered for entertainment rather than a factual un-biased account. Sometimes that may literally mean making a story more sunny, perhaps painting a cool and rainy boat show weekend as being more warm, sunny and fun than in reality. The product being sold here is in part a fantasy and in part a form of escape. Things are generally going to be presented in a more positive upbeat fashion. It’s good business.

If Dim has further shocking revelations to make, I would suggest he post them here openly and clearly and under his own name. I don’t think most of us would hate him or shun him for his opinions. We are more likely to do so because of his methods.

Bacon is MURDER. Is it not bad enough that you chop down forests to make boats and then pollute the air and water with your gas guzzling original power? You also have to eat all the innocent pigs too?

UP Veggie Bacon….LOL!!! I bet that stuff is awful. But obviously non-fat. Those who know Alex can attest to that.

Speaking of UP, I wonder if Manley’s Fish Market in St. Ignace carries bacon. With their smoking process, it would be AWESOME! Best smoked whitefish on the planet.

I object to the senseless overuse of the Sinking Greavette photo. Please refrain from using it in the future. It touches too close to a sensitive and fearful nerve. A lawyer might add that it causes undue mental anguish, pain and suffering on woody boaters everywhere, hinting at a class-action suit against any future publishers of such a photo.

So today I am painting a boat bottom and will soon be, you guessed it….GOING BOATING…..life being to short to mess with an ass…when you can paint a bottom.
John in Va. Boat is right side up…hoping to get more paint on the boat than on me….

If other restorers were submitting stories and restoration coverage and alternative restoration processes and they were being denied “air time”, “print space” or whatever you want to call it, I would understand Dim, Tim, or anyone acting as Troll, but I don’t see that. I’m not all knowing or seeing either, but this is not a forum per Se, its a blog and certainly a positive position is encouraged, its our happy place. There’s enough negativity going on in the media but I think most recognize trolling for what it is and move on. I think we would all prefer and encourage healthy banter and hear more about how bacon and Mike’s monkey can make our boating more pleasurable.

  10. Berlin
    Berlin says:

It’s crazy how much time certain people put into making others on the internet feel bad. We’ve had so many outlandish trolls from the old brand social accounts I’ve managed – all it all stops the second they have to meet you face to face. Oh boy! Those were always my favorite days.
Calling them out subtly sometimes works, but they use hate/controversy to fluff their egos – however, once they see you in person, unaffected, they almost always give up and try to blend back into the community. Craft beer, comics, dog collars, tv shows all aren’t safe from the masked fedora of trolling. So i dawn on you all, a fedora of your own.

  12. Paul H.
    Paul H. says:

    “Wee, sleekit, cow’rin, tim’rous beastie,
    O, what a panic’s in thy breastie!” –

A couple of lines from Robbie Burns – they describe this silly little DIM very aptly, and in fact could apply to all trolls. Why are you so bloody weak and timid, and really – why are you so worked up?

Poor disenfranchised DIM, sitting at his keyboard lacks the minerals, the character, the fortitude to sign his own name. He brings immediate notoriety and enmity upon himself (like all trolls) through his sheer cowardice. The derision being expressed here is well earned – the only thing this utterly guileless little fellow has inadvertently though clearly communicated is his irrelevance and weakness. But we’re talking about him – is being mocked a sign of success for him?

I’ve been known to hold an opinion or two and even author the odd stridently expressed screed myself. I don’t agree with everyone, I don’t expect everyone to agree with me but I ALWAYS SIGN MY OWN NAME! The minute one foolishly tries to hide behind a cloak of internet anonymity, he loses any credibility he may have had a chance to earn. Anonymous prats like DIM are hopeless, puny and discounted. If you do not have the strength, conviction or courage to identify yourself, and/or resort to petty, infantile efforts to hide yourself through multiple aliases, you do not deserve an audience or a pulpit.

So, the mighty DIM takes anonymous potshots at a small hobby group, composed mostly of casual boaters and a number of people with passion, conviction and dedication. How self satisfying it must be for him to castigate those actually contributing to the hobby, either through commercial ventures or volunteerism.

Here’s an opportunity for your troll – Matt – let’s challenge him to identify himself, come out from behind his cloak and make his point, air his grievances and do so with some dignity? What’s he got to lose, except an IT carapace that really does him no good anyway? He’d be taken more seriously if he manned up and spoke under his own imprimatur, and he may regain some respect.

Wanna lay some money on the outcome of the challenge to DIM?

Learned something new today here on Woodyboater…
I always thought trolling was a way to catch fish by dragging a fishing line with a hook behind your wooden boat. Sounds like Dim might be put on that hook soon and dragged behind “We-caught-him”.

    • m-fine
      m-fine says:

That is the origin of the term for internet trolls as well. An internet troll is someone who baits his hook with generally negative and controversial comments hoping to catch a big reaction. They also happen to have a strong resemblance to the type of troll that lives under a bridge so the term now has a double connotation to it.
