10 Reasons This Pandemic Could Be A Good Thing For The Classic Boat World

First, this sucks, no question. And our lives would have of course been better off without going through this. But if you crack open the positive side of your mind, there is some amazing stuff happening that will change the way we all are doing things now, and the the Classic Boat universe will go about doing things. We have created a list of course to highlight some of the things that are game changers in a good way.
It was a start
- Virtual Shows. This is the start of what will be an amazing future for events and attracts new people to the passion that are digital natives. You can be introduced to our world while at your home. It’s a tad clumsy now, but by the end of the summer will be refined well.
- Facetime, Skype and Zoom make it possible for customers having their boats restored stay in the loop, and make real time choices without having to visit the restorer. Which leads to..
- It no longer is necessary to have your boat restored close by. For example If you like Sierra Boat Co, but live in Texas, send the boat and visit it through ZOOM?
- After being all cooped up and dealing with the horror of being less than 6 feet from another human. Going out on a wonderful wood speed boat that is driven by history is an amazing adventure into all thats good in our universe with friends.
- Even though we are apart, buried in our houses. I have never felt more connected with people far away. Think.. We ALL, no matter the language, worth money wise, color, values.. ALL share this experience. This has brought the world together in a beautiful way.
- Even though we are a divided political nation. We are on the same page when it comes to this. And thats a shared Value, it’s almost as if the universe said, enough division.
- If you want to live and work from the water. Why not if you can. The concept of an office will forever be changed.
- Online selling. To go back to our pals at Sierra Boat Co, they are doing a ton of sales online, and on ebay. Yes, thats online. But you know what I mean.
- Open your mind as a business to new revenue streams. Online, Virtual, In person house calls, different types of boat events. The Thunder Run concept is brilliant. And this is the best part. All these things will be income streams when this is over and be a part of your business for good.
- With all this time, you have gotten details done on your boat, your life, your family that you never had time for. A real reminder that family both blood and varnish related are the most important thing in the world.

But the border is closed for the foreseeable future. I am in Canada and can’t get to a boat I want to buy. Now that is confining. Anyone with a suggestion to overcome this hurdle ?

Either this shutdown stops, as it makes almost no sense per many economists AND clinicians, and is causing damage that has yet to be fully realized, or we are in very serious trouble far worse than this virus. I sent emails to every NY state assembly-person this week, and the prior week, and to senators and congress people. Unless we act and let them know what we think…they will do what they seem to do best: cause mayhem, do the wrong thing and in this case destroy millions financially…while their incomes are secure. I urge everyone to ACT.

A bit of The life of Brian, “look on the bright side of life” to this pandemic. However, Matt’s effort to focus on the positive is to be commended. My view is that something good always comes out of something bad. We may not perceive it during the course of the “bad”, but at some point it will become clear.
Bright side view – I was behind on some topside maintenance which is now almost done and I replaced the copper gas line and added a (discrete) with the recommendations and ideas from this site. Cannot wait to get back on the water mid May or June and safer for it.

So the ban has been lifted on boating in Michigan. Yaaaaaa! Thinmgs are looking better. Let’s just use good sense. Watch our social distancing.
So much to say, but the main thing I have gotten out of all of this is that we humans were not even remotely prepared for this, or any other disaster for that matter. Households, businesses, and the elected officials…the whole lot.
We were standing there with our pants around our ankles and we got spanked by a 57 Chevy Nomad doing 55mph.
Elbow bumps and Clorox Chewables. What the hell? Oh and I HATE the word “virtual” now…..
