It’s OK, 6 out of every 10 boaters suffer from it. It can be rather emotional and touchy to talk about. But we are here to talk about it in the open. Think of the pain and missed pleasure your partner is missing out. Pre Mature Winterizing is not just you, its your partner and boat as well. Now, sadly there is no pill for this yet. But you and your Woody Boat have no fear, there is a simple solution. There are Behavioral Techniques that can help, Medication and Counseling. Lets talk about them here. Behavioral Techniques – Near the end of the season, leave your boat alone. maybe read magazines and look at pictures of amazing boats. Try and fight the urge to go out on the boat. Wait, and then when its kinda cold and you are about to Winterize the heck out of your boat, go out and ride. Ride like the wind. Feel the passion again, feel the wind flowing through your one hair on your balding head. YOU ARE ALIVE AGAIN!

Medication – Go out into the barn/ garage, whatever, open an old can of Varnish and take a deep sniff. Right before you black out .. because thats stupid… But when you pass out and hit your head, you will no doubt have to go to the hospital, thus avoiding Winterizing, and maybe just maybe you will get a warm boat ride in! Then again, there is always Warm Hot Chocolate on a cool boat ride with your loved ones. mmmmm Hot creamy chocolate. Maybe with some small little marshmallows.

Well, I think that about covers it. Yup. I think I have just about covered this sensitive topic. And remember, you are never alone with your issue. maybe if we talk about it, we can all just enjoy this cold winter together.
After 1st frost yesterday, after being on two different tractors for over five hours, took the thompson out of toy box. Hooked up hose to run the gas out of carb. After it died, boatress comes out and asked if i was going boating…said not today, but was ready for whenever. Guess she had more for me to honey-do.

I almost wished I’d left my Thompson in the water…then I remembered hauling a woody out some years ago in a wet suit with snow falling. I decided that caution would prevail

Round about middle of October I’ve had enough and it’s time to lock her up in the huge boat shed at my local yard amongst a row of mostly fiberglass blow boats. Perfect storage! Wooden building, gravel floor, not heated. Nothing better than that feeling of excitement in the Spring when I slide open that boat shed door. It’s like a new barn find all over again. I’d miss that ritual if I could boat year round.
My 25SP out in the snow after a freak Saturday snow storm. Went out Sunday for football only to find snowmobiles at the tavern rushing their season. The boat is now called “Uncle Buster” and was the header in a shot from Gull Lake a couple days ago. Too old for that stuff. Had to sand the ramp to pull it out.
Buy an outboard, go boating all winter!

Snow last night, 40 mph gusts today, I’m glad Panther is tucked away. Until the next nice day.
I am suffering from premature blizzard. We got over a foot since yesterday morning and it is still falling.
I agree with WoodyGal. With an inboard, the penalty for winterizing too late is pretty severe. It is better to prematurely winterize the inboards, and then have an outboard to use until the lake turns solid.
Woody, I’m with you all the way… we should boat long into the winter season if we can. But, somehow, I can’t help but think that things will not quite be the same as boating on hot summer days. Am I missing something?
That reminds me that I need to plan a trip to the mountains to ski!

The challenge with pushing the winterization is that even though I was cooking wieners on the boat grill and taking super moonlight cruises just one week ago today I am pulling boats and moorings in snow flurries.
buy a BOATSAFE heater…..look em up. Big boats cruise all year with those. That is why I get to
GO BOATING….all year long!

What about separation anxiety? After finishing the boat last spring and the engine did not perform as expected (Home built) I had the good fortune to borrow an engine from my friend Karl for the summer. Of course that has to come out now, give it back to him, and the boat sits with no engine in it. It does eliminate the winterizing factor!
I didn’t follow my own advice from last year and missed out on four more 60-degree weekends: I have a heated boathouse. And that’s here in the Great White North: I live in Minneapolis and our cabin is right across the border in NW Wisconsin. Doh!

This is obviously missing that joy that outboard boaters have in that they generally need little to no winterization so they are at the ready whenever there is a warm snap. And if the outboard boat is small enough to fit in the garage, even better!
No more PMW for me. I realized as long the water is not frozen you can always go boating. Convincing my wife to take the boat out in the winter was harder. So I built in heating in the cabin and after cabin from both engines. At 20F we have now about 70F in the cabin and 60F in the after cabin. It worked we have been boating from 1 january to 31 december.
