An Actual Wood Boat In Bend Oregon. Yup. Right Here.

The cradle is also a work of art
I know you all have been very VERY patient with me this week. WEAK.. My vacation pictures of the bathrooms of Oregon, and yesterday it happened. I found a cool wood Kayak. built from scrap materials by Steve Shank, okay its not a Chris Craft or Gar Wood, but technically wood and a boat.

We were at the Fall Festival in Bend, which by the way is a very cool event, and the town was busting with very fit people. The town of Bend is small and it seems like the bulk of the people here work remotely, or retired. Which makes it a very cool mix, and so there is a ton of stuff going on. Also added to that mix is the west coast entrepreneurial spirt.

Built from plans
So not only did I find a cool boat, but also a new business concept that is right down our communities lane. The place is called DIY Cave and has grown over the years and is helping a ton of people have a place with tools, instructors and general encouragement to try it yourself.

HERE IS THE LINK to see more of the workshop
I personally LOVE this concept, and something like this would do well in our community. The wood boat community, the only issue I see is the amount of people in one area. But here in Bend, with the sort of folks that live here, its perfect. So, there ya go. Today we head to a Mountain, then tomorrow to the coast for a drive up to Astoria to the museum there and then back to Portland with a stop to see Mike Mayer and his shop. So there will be some boat stuff. At some point. Thanks for tagging along.

The map Mike Mayer sent. Now all I have to do is look for the red stuff on the road. Easy!

Thx Matt. Unfortunately map is upside down. Portland (north) should be toward the top.
Tell Mr. Becky we say Hi!
Hey, what the heck did we do to the dude in the back ??
and what did you do to the dude in the front?
Thx Matt. Unfortunately the map is upside down. Portland (north) should be at the top.
Reedville Railway DIY Cave?
I knew you would sniff some varnish, and find a wood boat some where Matt. Very cool. I wish we had something like the DIY cave near. It would be a fun place to volunteer.
When I was 16 there was a place in town you could rent car repair lift by the hour
You could do your own repairs
Thanks woodyboater
What is with that upside down map?
(see photo)
Mike, “Load up everyone, we’re ready to launch the boat!”
Sorry, a better shot….
At first I thought “wtf?”, then I realized……..
can we see a deck view?
Where is Mr. B?
