It feels a little like Christmas opening up these files from Holly up in Huron. Holly has the gift of a great artist. She can make almost any situation feel emotional. Wonderful. Beautiful.

Cloudy sky? No problem. Dock shot? Sure. People yapping about screw sizes? Click. Perfect. THAT is true joy to me, and hopefully to you, too. With so many ways now to render, manipulate and perfect an image, it’s becoming increasingly rare—and wonderfully human—to simply capture a feeling. Thanks, Holly, for letting us feel the moment from up there.

Okay, I gotta say it, And yes the condos help the shot ..because they are so just not there, yet there. The repetitive nature of them is kinda horrible and yet nice all at the same time.

What may look like a simple photo is actually a very thought through image. All this happens in a mila second. Thats the artist eye. It just feels it. CLICK. I will break it down> The colors all work together in harmony, and thats not by chance In a real moment, they don’t, but in this they do. The greens and blues are slightly muted to work, the tan of the building and her pony tail and the hat all co exists in a way that ties it all together. All these colors let the warmth of the varnish wood represent nature, life and passion. And the final touch is very subtle, but the drip of water from the exaust pipe lets you feel the energy, the speed, or the slow rumble of apssing though that crisp water. Note the strong verticl lines of the poles, Crain and lines in the cargo container. In contrast the horizontal lines of the boat. And the kapow moment, the angle of the stern design right under the Chris Craft logo, leads your eye right back in. And the yellow color line in the middle acts as a horizon line leading your eye to the left. And that is why I like this image. For the record, I could do this with every image I pick.
Well yesterday was “here come the boats” day in Port Huron and it kept us hopping getting them all safely tied up. We are ready for show day #1!

After a 4 hour drive to the show in mist and drizzle yesterday the sky finally cleared just as we got to the launch ramp. A quick shout out to the great group of volunteers, especially Rick, for all their help! Today looks to be great weather. An amazing collection of antique and classic boats here!
Matt, I agree these photos are outstanding. Your discussion of each photo helps make Holly’s work shine. Which makes me wonder if you could direct us to some of your professional ads? Have you ever slipped one of them into Woody Boater without telling us? You write that you are heading off to wherever for a shoot but how do we know if that’s all legit or are you just going off on a quick vacation. Come on man, you can strut your stuff.
Matt, I think it’s time to take all of those classic Woody Boater print ads out of mothballs.
What’s great too is how Steve and Holly complement each other with similar but different emphases at the same event. Action, motion, sprays, people and their boats, the excitement of the ride, vs the lines, stills, slower cruises, backgrounds, calmer moments in time also tying the people to the boat. Add Matt’s professional perspectives of details I’d normally not notice along with humor and these last few days of photos have been awesome. These boats are like super models. Every photo is Art. Which made me just think of Art.
Holly, Steve and the Michigan gang. You are spoiling us. What a great week this has been on WB. Thanks again to all.
I guess I’m a little dense as I never picked up on the inclusion of ACBS INTERNATIONAL as part of the Boat the Blue Show. That answers all my questions about the amazing number of boats, the incredible condition of this fleet, and the amount of media coverage, all very much warranted. I’m sure best is yet to come but I can’t imagine topping this. Pure Michigan.

As the very proud female owner of Buster—the 1959 Cruisers Inc. Commander lapstrake with the Kiekhaefer Mark 75A “Tower of Power” in the judging photo—that photo and especially its caption made me laugh out loud!
Lapstrake outboards rarely elbow their way into the Woody Boater spotlight, especially at an International show where the big, fast and sexy boats usually get all the camera love. Seeing Buster crash the party was almost as much fun as the caption!
Despite the serious plaid discrepancy and my egregiously modern footwear, Buster somehow escaped without a fashion deduction—and earned Gold and Best in Class!
I’ll be scouring the local thrift stores for period-correct sneakers before the next show. 🙂
