Do Not, I Repeat, Do Not Tell Wayne Bomb.

,

The B is in B …..sh

It’s been a cray cray week, and in between meetings and very early in the morning, Wayne and I have been doing small jobs on B to getter done! The varnish repair is a little frustrating because the wet varnish kinda cramps our style and inevitably is in the way.  But having to do build coats has to start in the AM And then late in the afternoon.

The self inflicted wound

Sanded, stained and build coats

More

Mr B had to step in and take charge

Getting there but not yet. Some stain issues

But built up. This all happened on Sunday, now about 7 coats, it will pumis and rottenstone out the dust

Done, gotta wait a bit to pumis. That’ll be on Sunday to let the varnish really dry

Now here is the part Wayne is going to go on a Bombing run. Oh boy. Late yesterday, it became clear we needed to remove the stuffing box and move it forward. Fine, it worked as a way to adjust it all based on the increase of thickness of the bottom. BUT, Wayne had done a great job getting the Engine all set in place and wired up.

If you listen carefully, you can hear Wayne loose it right about now. But you can see that the holes had to be filled.

Okay, now in order to remove the stuffing box plate, I had to raise the engine to remove the shaft. The real issue for me was to fill the older screw holes with some wood and epoxy so its not a ribbon of little holes. And while I am at it clean it up. This drives Wayne CRAZY.  So this morning, before my day of meetings, I will run over there and clean it up. I had to wait over night for the holes and toothpicks to dry. Such is how this has all been going .

This is a typical day, And trust me, those little gaps fill in with, oh can you stay on for a second. Oh and Cardiac is not a Dr meeting for me, we are working on a Cardiac ad campaign – DNB is my break in the day, Do Not Bother. You can see how thats going. HA

I suppose in a way it’s reflective of any DIY job. It’s done in free moments while employed. If you are retired, a no brainer. This has actually been the greatest part of this challenge. TIME. Other things around the house have had to take a back seat. Which course reminds me. UGH, We need to get the seats ready… Okay, off to the railway before it gets light out.

How do you move the stuffing box forward without changing the position of the shaft hole in the keel? What WoodyBoater magic geometry am I missing?

WTF??!! I leave for a day to finish up the trailer and Matt goes berserk over a few thousands of shaft misalignment. Geez. Under the gun! This is going to be a close one to finish before Dora. And then I hear Matt wants to leave for Dora on Monday, not Wednesday like we normally do. We don’t have time to do things right, but we’ve got time to do them twice. Matt – nice job of cleaning and polishing the stuffing box you painted last month! May not run, but it will look good! Just sayin!

Seems like if the bottom thickness has changed but the shaft hole is still the same then you would have to move the prop strut back slightly, plugging the original holes and redrilling after finding its “place” based on shaft angle. Then the engine would line up with minor adjustments. But I’m not there and we’ll see where this goes. Always a fly in the ointment. This would drive me to drink. When you’re OCD, there’s no end.

OK CHILL! first, that is the shaft log…the stuffing box is the do dad on the end. I am not their either…but I can tell you guys this is the critical point. Deep Breath. When you get the log where you want it…which according to nothing but a change in bottom thickness ain’t gonna be moving MUCH…consider, if possible, using a bronze carriage bolt in place of at least a pair of those screws…iffy wood, toothpicks and goop…plus inevitable vibration…? Chill…both of you…this is going to work out. You have come so far…just do it. Water test soon. John…heading to Tavares from Va….soon….

When we’re working on things at the cottage we have a saying… ‘it looks good from my house!’, in other words it’s good enough, time to go boating!

Well, it’s 8:35 and its done. As in lined up. BUT will need to really focus on it and do it right. We can also shim the engine a bit with some very sweet Purkens shims. The good news is the log is about 1/2 forward. There was only one set of holes which are now plugged with west and wood. No goop or crap. My fear of drilling new holes for the strut is, well, new holes, and think????? Moviner the log is kinda the same thing. Moving the log was an old timers suggestion.

There is NOTHING in the universe that can match this moment. Leo Kotke on the tunes, early light and working on a boat. Now back to work.
