On The Road/Airplane To Oregon. Great, Now I Need To Learn How To Spell Oregon.

This is so I remember where our car is.
Well, right about now I am deep state of Jet lag, and about to drive from Portland to Bend where the Boatress and I are gonna hang with the former Berlin/BoulderNow Bend Bureau. I did check and there is an extra charge for bringing a boat back on the plane. So I am safe. Although there is an engine in Arkansas, and well, I could try and talk the Boatress into a you haul situation across the country. Boat in tow? Although I somehow think I would be doing the drive by myself, and not to home, thats for sure. I don’t think Bend is a boating hub anyway. Although Crater Lake is on a visit wish list. The deepest lake in the US, basically a volcano filled up with water. No bot tours though. The plan is to be in Oregon for 10 days, so expect lame ass stories unless you send some in. Enjoy your non boating family adventure!
Thanks for the info on Crater Late and looked it up,, WOW. I tell my grand children,” you learn something new every day”, I did today.
Best & be safe
Being an east coaster I have never heard of Bend OR, but knowing that Ron Stevenson would LOVE to give you a boat ride while you are out there I decided to look it up. Ron is 5 1/2 hours away. I doubt your going to make that trip, but I noticed that you are only 1/2 from Smith Rock (not to be confused with Chris Rock) so you should make that trip and get a family photo for your Christmas Card.
this is what you will see when you come up to Muskoka
I don’t know what you mean that Bend isn’t the hub of boating. I pulled my Dorsett Catalina out of Sisters, OR just 25 miles up the road about 10 years ago. Yeah, yeah it is plastic but still cool.
You need to go to McMinnville and check out the Spruce Goose. It’s kind of a boat and the Evergreen Museum is a really neat place.
We were at Crater Lake a few years ago. Very pretty Lake. No boats, but it is still worth the trip.
We got here late last night, and are headed to Bend now. Turns out mark Setterholm’s daughter is in bend, so maybe there is a Riva there I can borrow to tow around in our rental Volvo…. ugh, Mike Mayor is out here as well, Ron and the gang. We could drive around and meet everyone?
There used to be an old (wooden) crater lake tour boats under the Hawthorne bridge in Portland. For Sale!!!
Mike, are you talking about Dan Indjerd’s Crater Lake boat that is now called the Kaniksu? It is alive a well up at Priest Lake and used as a Party boat. They ferry people around during the annual Dry Rot boat show. Here is a bit of info about it from the 2017 Dry Rot.
We have seen this boat many times at Priest Lake, and wondered about it’s story.
So, Wes, where is the info about it that you mentioned ?
Thanks
Being it that I live here in Oregon, yeah, Crater Lake is worth the drive. But you are only two hours away or less from our favourite spot, Odell Lake. What would be cool is if Mike M. and I and anyone else, would tow our boats down there this weekend for a day on the lake. He could bring Mike and I could bring Zoomer.
Yes, it is last minute but you don’t make it out west often. And we could help you pronounce Oregon correctly so you don’t go back home and muck it all up.
Let me know about this weekend. You have my email.
Ha! I’m not the only one who captures an image where they parked in the long-term lot!
Do the hike down to the water at Crater Lake. After what seems like traversing switchbacks for hours, you’ll know you are finally close to the bottom when the hikers making the return trip aren’t winded and out of breath.
Sea Lion Caves on the coast…
Hey! You are just in time for our boat show this weekend!
We leave today for Lake Chelan, )only 55 miles long) for our famous “Mahogany & Merlot”. Grab a ride on a piston powered unlimited hydroplane while you are here!
I recommend the Rouge River mailboat excursion from the Medford/Grants Pass area…Not wooden boats…Originally wooden drift boats, now oversized Aluminum flat bottom barges with overpowered engines with jet drives…but well worth the time and only an hour ish from the Crater Lake headquarters. Down the Upper Rouge River Valley which is beautiful..
Daughter of the owner of my old 47 Chris Craft Deluxe Runabout lives and plays in Bend, however Contango is still in NorCal. Alternatively, Lake Chelan is quite nice…my guess 6-8 hours north on 395…
One more tasty tourist stop, while in Oregon. Tillamook cheese
Not to mention Tillamook Ice Cream…
Between all that boating try Smith Rock State Park but be ready for some elevation on the trail. We did the trails after my last big trail race, the 3 Sisters 50k with 6600 ft of climbing a few years ago. You’re going from one of the most humid places to one of the driest climates.
Between all the boating and fooding, take a trip to Smith Rock State Park. Be ready for some trail elevation and dry climate compared to the humidity you’re use to. I can’t believe we hit this the day after we did the 3 Sisters 50k Trail Race with 6600 ft of climbing. But that was a few years ago, traded my trail shoes for bike shoes.
Meant to attach the trail photo, the vistas are incredible. Also hit Crater Lake earlier before the race and then hit the Pacific Coast Trail. Not sure what causes the delay in posting so thats why you get 2 versions since the first never showed for a while. Guess your content reviewer must have been on break.
Good god, we are now in Bend. Eating $20 cookies.
Ah yes, those cookies. The prices are steep because the homes used to be $85,000 when Bend was a dump that you only went to because you were staying at Sunriver and going skiing at Mt Bachelor. Then it got all trendy so the locals need those $20 cookies to pay for the million dollar, 900 sq ft bungalows. Got family and friends there so fun to visit, but no thanks. The locals kill me – $7500 mountain bike, $3500 kayak, and a $2850 Subaru in the garage.
