North To Astoria Oregon And A Brief Stop For A Rescue On Cannon Beach

Jet Ski rescue click bait picture.
Yesterday we packed our bags up and headed north on the 101 headed up to Astoria. 101 is a beautiful drive, but kinda is rough curving around for 4 hours. The cure, stopping along the way. Taking a beach/food/pee break. I will let the pics tell the story.

But first we went to the Tilamook Dairy…in Tilamook. YUMMMY

And then we stopped at Cannon Beach to see Heystack Rock. Which is very impresive in person

I did a pano image to get the location in perspective

Poor Suzy, I kept sticking her in the shot for perspective.

It was very windy. VERY WINDY

I love me a good old happy dog

The click bait rescue oporation getting under way

Okay, okay, the rescue was actually training. But still very cool to watch

Wheel in the Jet ski

Love the light house in the background

Zooming around in the surf

BAM – thats it, it was kinda them driving around. So we got back and headed to Astoria

The Cannery Hotel

The real deal and VERY nice

A look out of one of the windows.

I did a cool Pano to capture our view. The Bridge was built in 1966 and connects to Washington State

Right out the door. HUGE

Some serious fish boats

Huge tankers waiting on the other side of the room

Needless to say the sunset was insane.
Stay tuned! Headed back to Portland today.

Um, not a word about the old “wood” fishing boat under cover in the Cannery Hotel shot?
Um, Thats because tomorrows story is about how Matt bought it and the next installment of “Daisy chain 2.2” – and the first installment of don’t let Suzy kill Matt.
As usual I am with Greg….really cool boat under that boat shed….and then the Bentley in the driveway? But hey…forget it….send us what you want and have a good time! John in VA
Great trip Matt. Might mention, particularly for those geographically and historically challenged people “back east”, that Astoria is near where the Columbia river empties into the Pacific Ocean, and is close to where Lewis and Clark camped during the winter of 1805-06 during their exploration of the nw.
No Oregon visit would be complete without a trip thru the willamette valley wine country s. of Portland in the newberg -McMinnville area. I hope you get down there, where pinot noir is king. The main woody boater connection there that I can think of is that newberg was the home of the much missed former acbs president, dick Werner,
Good call Don, Dick was a great guy, and responsible for most of the “how to” recordings that ACBS has, taken at the symposiums he put togerther.
👍
Approaching Astoria at last light.
Hey Matt you did not mention the Coulumbia River maratime museum?
Canon Beach is nice. The straw stacks are impressive. Is that Rolls your chauffeur driven car for the week. The Astoria-Megler bridge is impressive as it spans the Columbia river to Washington.
While you were at Tillamook. Did you check out thr Morning Star, a replica of a wooden sailing ship. The Morning Star delivered cheese all up and down the coast before railroads and roads.
You can have the Rolls Royce drive you to a resturant and pick you up. Very cool treat. The hotel is wonderful. We are going to the Museum this morning before we go on to Lake Oswego Boat Works and then to the airport.
I thought Oswego bot works location was a secret
I asked Mike about that he says it keeps visitors away that want to hang out and talk and keep everyone from their work
Similar to what I do at Streblow
Sometimes I’ll pick up a broom
Thanks woodyboater
That is also where the Columbia Bar is (the Haulover Inlet of the west coast only worse).
Since you’re in McMinville, you might as well check out a flying boat
