Smith Rock, Not Our Smith, Another Smith

The fam and Grandog!
Yesterday we traveled to Smith Rock, which is right outside of Redmond, which is about 15 minutes from Bend. For the record, NOT named after anyone in my family, but our family did enjoy it, and no real VIP smith related accommodations. Just another group of Smiths, at Smith Rock.

The rock, not the Rock who is a star, but this rock, which is a rock.

For size perspective, that arrow is pointing to people

Close up from iPhone zoom, see them at the top middle right

Closer, on an iphone

That zoom feature is insane
The history of the name is kinda a bit confusing, even though the Smith name isn’t. Named after John Smith, who was Linn County Sheriff and an Oregon state legislator in the 1850s and 1860s. A newspaper article credits Smith with “discovering” the rock… Like it was suddenly there. Hey where did that come from? Another story claims the rock was named after a soldier named Smith who fell to his death from the rock in 1863 while his unit was camped nearby. And now I will add another story, it was discovered by Woody Boater Smith on a family adventure out west.

How you climb up. No way!

Another very nice Oregon Bathroom

Local birds. This one was crazy beautiful

In all that stone color, the greenery is wonderful.

Like a cliche image.
Anyway, thanks all for following along on our break from reality. Hey, its better than just shutting down for a couple weeks. And our family.. you know the other bazillion Smiths out there get to see how old we are all becoming.

Everyone must be on west coast time . Sleeping in. I am the 1st of the day! Coo9l place very western barren. Enjoy it.
Are those Juniper Berries that are used in the flavoring of Gin?
Great pictures of magnificent landscapes. And I know pictures don’t do justice of their grandness. Looks like you’re thoroughly enjoying this well deserved vacation. The best way to recharge those Woodyboater batteries.
Glad to see that you got your Christmas Card pic taken with your own ROCK!
PS: Just photo shop in Ham & Kelsey.
No one will be any the wiser.
Looks awesome, keep them coming!
